Medical question...
    #9490596 -

Okay, so for the past...oh...I don't know...two months or so...I've been having weird symptoms. I'm thinking that I may be experiencing the onset of MS or fibromyalgia, but I'm also concerned that this may be cancer or something. I'm hoping there's at least a couple med students on here that could help me out a bit. I've been to doctors many times throughout this period of two months, and they are confused.

It first started out with a mushroom poisoning. I know, stupid of me, right? Yeah...it sucks. I learned my lesson though. They were amatoxin containing Galerinas, I found this out after I matched up my initial symptoms, which were delayed about 6-8 hours after I ingested these mushrooms. I thought they were some type of honey mushroom, but I was wrong. Please do not tell me I'm a dumbass for doing this, I already know that! I'll go over this in detail.

At about 6:00PM on Oct 6, I decided to eat these, because they looked like honey mushrooms and the spore print turned out white.
At around 6:20, I felt rather weird...like, the feeling of being poisoned, and I KNEW they weren't psychoactive shrooms either. I induced vomiting on myself.
At around 11:00PM, I started to feel very nauseous and shaky. My mouth turned to sand, pretty much. I felt very weird. I decided not to go to the hospital right away, because I was also getting rather tired.
The next day, I felt even more strange. It was the afternoon, and confusion fell over me. I decided to drive myself to the hospital. Once I got in the area of the hospital, my confusion got worse and I felt drunk. I literally did not know where I was and I kept getting lost, and having to make U-turns, even though on a normal day, I know my way around the area. I almost forgot how to operate my car. I was still shaking and felt really thirsty. I FINALLY found my way to the hospital though. I went straight to the red zone, urgent care, and registered. My abdomen was starting to really hurt.

They took me in and ran several tests. They noted that my electrolytes were out of whack (characteristic of amatoxin poisoning) and also a couple of my liver enzymes were elevated. They gave me an IV painkiller and ran more tests, which were extremely painful despite the opiate they gave me. They could not find any evidence of toxins in my body though. However, this is also characteristic of amatoxins because they drop below detectable levels in blood serum within 24 hours, and I had not ingested that many Galerinas. About 4, which were vomited up within 20 minutes.

I was admitted to the hospital overnight, and since I was past the point of no return, they treated my electrolyte imbalance and gave me IV saline to help clear out the remaining toxins in my blood. I was allowed to go home the following morning when they ran more blood tests and everything was back to normal.

Well, anyway, for the following week after, I had terrible diarreah. Like, watery...basically pissing out my a-hole. Kind of like what you would get if you had a parasite or chlorea. Anyway, this caused me to drop about 20 pounds. I went from 150 to 130lbs in only a week. I had terrible pain all over my abdomen, and it felt like my insides were burning. However, my stools were not bloody...

Anyway....I was put on a couple herbal supplements, and started to take those, only to have my pain get worse and worse. My stools turned back to normal after the first week, and I started slowly recovering. I had to eat foods that were easy to digest. However, I had noticed a few changes to the way my body was working...namely these:

Sweating: I've started sweating A LOT, in greater quantities, even if I am just sitting. I can feel the sweat roll down my side from my armpits. Also, I started getting night sweats about a month after the poisoning. Really bad ones...like I am soaked in the middle of the night and I have to change.

Intermittent low-grade fever:  about 99.5ºF...yesterday, I also got a wave of a fever like that. It lasted only about 10 minutes. I also have been getting chills.

Headaches: these feel like my brain cavity is being pumped with air with a bicycle pump...a lot of pressure up there.

Dizziness: I don't know why I get this, but it seems to be really bad in the morning when I first wake up. It could be from dehydration, though I'm not sure.

Formication: I feel like there's little ants crawling atop my skin sometimes, though I know nothing is there.

Stiff neck: This one happens occasionally. It gets really bad and it feels like there's small sandbags tied around my spinal column. also when I turn my head I can sort of hear a "gritty" sound.

REALLY BAD PAIN, everywhere: I've been getting pains in my ankle, my knee, my elbows, fingers, forearms, lower back, face, collarbone, teeth, and muscles. I don't know what this is all about...this is why I think I may have gotten MS or fibromyalgia from the amatoxins...that maybe some of them got trapped around my spine and have started to dissolve that sheath lining.

Tiredness: on a few days, I've been sleeping as much as 14hours a day. Some days though, I'm good with only 8-10 hours.

Palpatations: On a few occasions, I have been noticing my heartbeat. It beats especially loud periodically...

Sensitivity to pain: When I was walking out in the snow the other day, I somehow messed up my ankle a bit, even though I wasn't aware that it moved awkwardly. The result was terrible chronic pain about an 8/10 on the pain scale, that lasted until I took 12 ibuprofen, applied icyhot 4 times, and forcibly moved my foot in circles until it cracked and the pain subsided.

Poor appetite: I've taken note that my appetite has decreased substantially recently. I easily gained 10lbs back about a month ago, so now I weigh 140. However, my appetite basically died after that. I have to wait about 7 hours inbetween meals before I start to feel hungry. This has affected my ability to gain more weight. I've been getting kind of let down because even when I have been eating a lot and lifting some weights, it seems as if the weight just falls right off of me before the day is over. It doesn't stay on, which is concerning me...plus, if I am eating hearty, and I lift a good amount of weight and do a lot of reps, it appears to me that my muscles are not getting as big as they used to, when I used to lift the same amount of weight and eat the same. They appear to be wasting, though I still have no trouble lifting the same weight from day to day.

Malaise: Sometimes, like every couple days or so, I get this weird feeling that I'm getting sick. I just start to feel icky. Not like I'm going to throw up, but it's like I don't feel...right. This happens right before I get the wave of a fever, which lasts about 10 minutes, then subsides.

I don't know what's up with me. I've read some articles done by researchers that think MS could be brought on by environmental toxins, and the pain I feel lasts probably around twenty minutes in one spot, ranges from a 3-5 on the pain scale, then subsides, but then the pain appears somewhere else. I am very frustrated because my blood work keeps coming back normal, except for my ALT/AST ratio, which is like a 0.5 (when it should be 1:1), which suggests non-alcoholic liver damage...I know I effed up my liver already somewhat from the toxic mushrooms that I stupidly ate. I guess I can't trust a spore print these days... :*(

But the pain I'm getting all over my body at random times, is confusing the heck outta me. I don't know why I'm getting it, and I haven't gotten blood tests for about a month. Should I go back to the doctor for more tests? I'm thinking maybe a Complete Blood Count is in order, because I did notice this suspicious mole a while back (probably about a month and a half ago), that was raised, but only about 2mm across. It was probably about 5mm tall. I removed it myself using a pair of nail clippers. I first tried trimming just a bit of it off, and I noticed that when I cut into it, it was painless...so I ended up cutting below the mole with the clippers, which was very painful, and I removed the whole thing. However, it was bleeding after I did this, and I am worried that my self-initiated excision on that mole caused some of those cells to seep into my bloodstream? I'm not even sure if it was a malignant melanoma or not...It didn't have an irregular border, it was just a raised column of brownness. It was near my armpit, and so when I went to a dermatoligist for her to check out the scar I left behind, she said it was probably an ingrown hair. But that doesn't explain how difficult it was to remove it! I first tried pulling it out but it would just tug the rest of the surrounding skin with it, and thats when I resorted to the nail clippers.

All matter originates and exists only by virtue of a force which brings the particle of an atom to vibration and holds this most minute solar system of the atom together. We must assume behind this force the existence of a conscious and intelligent mind. This mind is the matrix of all matter."  --Max Planck

The jaundice is very mild. I have to press down on my skin to notice it, although it seems to be more prevalent on my face. The whites of my eyes haven't yellowed though, haven't noticed that at all. It's not present on my hands, but if I check around my upper arms, I can notice a little yellowing...

I also have this rash type thing that is new to me as well. If I use a hot pad for my pain, or say, run my fingernail over my skin, it turns red rather quick and lasts a long time. I remember before all this I would scratch my skin and it would just turn white, then go back to normal, unless I really scratched.

Yes, I do get diarreah pretty bad when I have more fatty foods, I've noticed. One day I had ordered pizza and I had some pretty messy BMs later on, along with cramping.

The urination is different, I do believe as well. It seems to be a lot more foamy than I've seen it before, unless I drink a LOT of water, then it appears normal. If I recall correctly before this poisoning took place, when my stream would hit the water in the toilet, it used to just diffuse, but recently it makes a lot of bubbles. Also, yesterday, it kind of hurt when I was trying to go..

I am 19, and I'm 5'10", 140lbs. I'm probably slightly underweight...

Also, on another note, my ears were ringing quite a bit last night before I fell asleep. I had noticed this symptom a lot more often right after the poisoning, and I also had a few episodes of blurry vision, which also happened for about the first two weeks after the mushroom ingestion. However, I haven't noticed this recently..

I should also make note that the doctors have thought I am depressed, and have prescribed me a couple anti-depressants lately. However, my night sweats had occured before I started taking the anti-depressants, but got a lot worse when I was taking them. I was put on Celexa first, which I have been on before, but the doc started me off on 20mg and working up to 40mg instead of 10mg up to 20mg, which is what I had previously started on. However, for whatever reason, I had an adverse reaction to the anti-depressant this time. It made my abdomen feel like it was on fire, and it caused me to feel really nauseated and extremely wired. I didn't sleep at all for five whole days, so I stopped taking it. Then another doctor decided to try Zoloft on me, and had me start out on 25mg and work my way to 50mg. I took the first dose, and ended up feeling VERY spacey and dizzy, almost like I had vertigo, so I stopped taking that after the first day. The random joint pains have been persisting ever since...it's been about three weeks since that dose of Zoloft I took.

If someone survives the first 2 weeks of mushroom poisoning they generally face many months of weird symptoms like yours...particularly joint pain. Keep your diet clean and just get plenty of fluids and sleep. You are most likely on the mend, but it won't happen quickly to my understanding. It may be a year from the initial date of poisoning before you are completely recovered. Just for safety sake have your blood work done again to check the status of your liver and kidneys. Also congratulate yourself for surviving a really deadly situation.
