It wont dry out your substrate but it will dry up your pot. I just put a lot of water in the pot with some small bricks I got from the garden store to elevate the jars. Just keep an eye on the water lever when you boil. My first go I turned the burner on high till I got a boil then down to medium for a slow boil and all my jars went to crap, my jar had contams break out everywhere, so I narrowed the problem down to the boiling step. Not enough heat= contams not sufficiently sterilized. Answer, More Heat!! No no problems!

A PC basically raises the boiling point of water so you get higher temps for faster and more thorough sterlizing.

In a normal pot the water won't boil any hotter even if you turn the stove higher...

Thanks for the reply. I think I might play it safe and ask Santa for a PC for Christmas. :laugh:

Now I have to search the boards for proper PC usage as I was so sure I was going to use a regular stock pot that I have not really investigated the PC properly.

I know its 15 psi for an hour or something....Ive heard some horror stories of people burning their jars in the PC's but I think as long as there is enough water I should be ok.

If Santa ends up being a motherfucker and I end up using a pot afterall then I will keep the boil on the high side for maximum steeeamm :smile:

when I steam treat my jars I do them for 1 1/2 hrs and so far knock on wood I am 100%. Even with that being said I just got and 8 qt PC tonight sears last one beat up box $10 off so only $29.00. Yeah now I can move on to grains.

What brand PC is it?

I wonder why some people steam their jars and get no contams while others steam their jars and have all sorts of problems...I guess it depends on a lot of variables.

I plan on using aluminum foil on my jars so I can use the lids to set the jars on while they are inside the pot, does anyone here have better results with the lids/foil or does it not really matter?

Im not exp. as others on here, but this is what I do and dont get any contams. I either put tin and top on or just tinfoil on them. I put about 4 cups water and about 6 jars in. Bring it to a quick boil and than down to a heat level that keeps a medium to heavy simmer with the top on. Need alot of steam. Do it for an hour and than cool and the rest of the steps on pf tek or other. I feel it is better than my cheap pc. I think a big part is making sure you sterilized procedures up till this are equaly important as pc/boiling,steamin

The PC was the 8qt Presto.

As far as steaming the jars or boiling them I am simple I just keep it on high and boil/steam the hell out of them. You just go by from time to time and add more water the way I do this is I have a tea pot that I boiled at the same time as the pot with my jars in it if the water is low I add water from the tea pot as it is still very hot and it comes back to a boil in no time at all. I have done it both with lid and foil and just the foil. If you do just the foil I would only steam as the seal is not solid enough I dont think to keep excess water from coming into your jars and messing up your moisture content.

Have you guys ever baked your vermiculite before you steam the BRF cakes? Im thinking about doing that too. I want to bake the flour too but Im afraid it might actually cook itself and that cant be good.

I would think that if you get the right temps for sterilization you do not need to do any of that as it will all get cooked so to speak when you do your jars. Just follow the teks and you'll be on your way.

That is true water boils at a set temp, but when you turn it higher it just seems to make a lot more steam. It could all be coincidence, I went from 24 bad jars (total loss) to one jar looking like it might be bad (acceptable). My first try the contams showed immediately :frown:

Sorry for the late post but my colonization is done :cool: here are some of the pictures:











Well there it is, i forgot to take some pics from the sterilization part but what i did was put some lid caps as spacers, a t-shirt and aluminum foil. I stored the colonized cakes inside a shoebox and poked some holes on the top of the box and stored it in my closet. Hopefully no contams :grin:

Well its been a while.

Out of my 5 jars, 4 have shown growth inside the cakes while one has shown nothing at all. One was doing really well until this morning i noticed trichodermia has infected it, here is pictures:





Thats the other side of it, fully white.. It doesnt seem like the trich has infected the inside of the white mycellium growth. But if there is any traces of green it should still be tossed right?

I dont have any experience yet so I cant help with your trich problem from what I have read you should probably just throw the whole jar out or sterilize it and chuck the contents after.

Im waiting for my mail here so im just trying to get everything ready, Ill probably disinfect my whole house today. Cant wait till my spores come but I hope they dont freeze, it is very cold where I live  ...patience i know....wish there was a head shop around here that sold spores so I wouldnt even have to order them. bummer.
