Beggining my first Cultivation -- PF TEK (need some help)

Hello, im new to the forums but I have been reading the very useful information posted on this website for im about to start growing my very own psylocibe cubensis Amazonian strand.

So far i have purchased this spore syringe from a local headshop:



I bought this about a month ago and stored it in a fridge. I recently noticed it grew some bubbles inside. Can anyone tell me if this is a bad thing or not? Also was storing it in a fridge a good idea?

I will be purchasing the rest of the supplies today and attempting the PF-Tek method, so stay tuned I will have pictures and proceedures posted soon :grin:

Those bubbles are probably fine. I hear tales of syringes stored in refrigerators lasting years. One month wont be bad, refrigerator or cool  dark place is fine. If you life in a hot climate stick to the fridge.

Welcome aboard. I am sitting just enjoying the mellow warmth of my first tea brewed from the fruits of my labors. I can tell you that you will get a wealth of info from people on the board here. i started back at the first of Nov with my first grow and I am amazed at how simple the PF tek is for cakes take a few precautions to avoid contaminates and you will be enjoying your own trip in about a months time. The best thing is it is truly yours.

Cool, thanks for relieving me of the stress i thought those bubbles meant that i had to get a new syringe, hehe. Well im about to walk out and buy the rest of the supplies. I have a few more questions tho.

Is a glove box required for inoculations or can i do without it? Also, I dont own a pressure cooker.. would a big pot filled with water do just fine?

Glove box is recommended ($15 using a plastic bin, glove holes and a pair of gloves) in a pinch a clear garbage bag works too....

I'd suggest do more reading...your questions are all answered in thousands of Tek's.

A glove box is a good idea, i would say it is required!!!  Yes, for PF tek you do not need to a PC, you may steam sterilize. Watch the videos in the link above, they will show you everything you need to know for PF Tek.

A PC is not needed for cakes, I would however recommend you fill the pot with a decent amount of water and boil on high or medium high for 1.5 hours. The first time I boiled jars I started it on a high boil and turned it down to a low slow boil. First time all jars where contaminated (24 jar total). Since I started boiling on high the whole time I got 0 problems. Also I inoculated jars with no protective verm layer and no glovebox without problems. I would suggest getting a glove box though, it helps and they are cheap so why not.

I do not have a pressure cooker and am nervous about contams. I am going to follow RR's video and sterilize in a pot... but you think I should keep the boil up high? Will this cause substrate to dry out?

Good luck man, if you're that paranoid about contams go ahead and get yourself a pressure cooker.  Pick up a small one at Wally world for 30 bucks or so, you won't be disappointed.

If money is really tight you can always check out Craigslist, Ebay, or local thrift shops.  If you have a peddler's mall you can more than likely pick one up for under 10 bucks.

good idea, Im new to these boards so thanks. I have everything I need except for a PC and strains...im still undecided on those, Im also confused on the dunk and roll info....I plan on dunking at room temp but not "cold shocking" in the fridge....there is some conflicting info on this procedure....what do you think?

Cold shocking is outdated info, there's absolutely no need to do it.

From what I've read FAE and 100% colonization are the biggest pinning triggers.

When I messed around with the PF tek a few years ago I tried one grow with just throwin the cakes in a FC and letting them go.  Didn't work out too well.

The second time I broke the cakes up and cased them with moss in tin baking dishes and that seemed to work the best for me.

I'm doing grain spawn and bulk substrate now tho.

Wow youre quick Thank you! I havent even looked at any procedures except for the PF Tek with BRF and the 1/2 pint jars...dont want to overload my brain...this will be my first grow and I am already obsessed and dreaming about it

haha, it's always great having a hobby that you thoroughly enjoy.  There's a mind-boggling amount of information on this site and it's easy to get lost in all of it.

Just remember, keep it simple & sterile and you'll be good to go.

Well here it is the rest of the supplies, tommorow i will be starting the inoculation,






Hopefully I got the right stuff. I got those jars at walmart, they where the only jars they had and one was even missing in the package. I didnt end up getting a glove box because none of the bins they had was suitable, i think i will go with the bag method.

Ok just make sure to review the videos that some folks have given you links to before hand so its all fresh in your mind and make sure you get the right moisture level and you should be on your way. Oh almost forgot if you are boiling the jars and not steaming them then make sure that you put something on the bottom of the pot like a washcloth or you run a very good chance of breaking your jars. I myself have a steamer set up where the water is in the bottom and the jars sit in the upper part suspended above the water. In this set up you just need to make sure you don't boil away all your water. Error on the high side of time not the low. Good luck and may the spores be with you.
