Switching to Vista - worth it?
    #9408425 -

Buying a laptop in the next couple days, probably from Dell.

It seems like id have to bend over backwards in order to get a computer with windows xp which i know + love.

I have software (particularily photoshop.) which wont work on Vista. :S

What to do, what to do - is Vista really that bad?

if you can get xp, do it, even if you have to bend over backwards. vista is really shitty... it hasn't crashed on me (yet) but there are just all sorts of stupid little quirky things that i can't change about it. it makes you feel like you're using a windows for dummies operating system. i'm going to switch back, i'm only using it because the computer was given to me with vista already in use, and i don't have an external to back my shit up yet

Vista isn't nearly as bad as many people seem to think.

I was also scared to try it out, as my new laptop came with it installed. I went through hell to install XP on it instead, and had a lot of problems. I ended up just installing Vista on it, and I've had it on here for about a year now and I love it and haven't had any problems.

Like any OS, vista requires you to tweak it out a bit, if you want to take full advantage of it. But I actually much prefer the look and feel of vista over XP, the extra tools, etc. Not to mention if you want to take advantage of DX10 you have to have it. The ONLY thing that's pissed me off is the UAC system, which is disabled easily enough.

After working with Vista for a year plus now, I actually prefer it over XP. Although I am very comfortable with XP, Vista just has more tools and options.

i don't understand where everyone comes from hating vista i havent had a single problem and i run windows vista 64 bit professional. i liked xp a lot, i like xp too it works for me. BUT everyone i know with a dell laptop despises it (my girl and father) my dads turns off whenever he has too many website tabs open (retarded) and my girls had quirky problems like flashing screen and its a new laptop. me and my brother have hp's and we lovem and i have zero complaints

Dell sells laptops with Ubuntu pre installed.  Same hardware, no operating system cost.  Not to mention you get to use linux, which is surprisingly super easy if you're willing to learn.  I switched from vista to Ubuntu out of curiosity, not because I didn't like vista.  And Ubuntu is totally better.

Really? That's amazing. I'm going to have to check that out. I tried Ubuntu on my computer a year or so back, but I got frustrated with it and got rid of it.

That's cool that Dell is preloading systems with Linux OS.

No Vista's not bad.  I had problems at first but the updates fixed them long ago.  But if you're an O/S snob you may disappointed.

i wouldn't get a dell. i have a one and the keyboard is already somewhat broken.

i'd find a laptop where you can downgrade to xp, it's not that hard.  Vista is horridly slow compared to xp ime.  and it's incompatible with quite a few programs.

Well Vista isn't any worse if you have the hardware to run it. I have a 2.5ghz quad core with 6 gigs of ram, and it runs just fine. You should be able to run it fine with less than what I have though.

I don't think Vista is all that bad. It sucks right out of the box, once you run through the NBR vista tweaks and tips it works ALOT better. Even if you don't do all the tweaks. I did it over a year ago and never had any problems since. Maybe it will freeze once in a blue, if I am on it all day or something and doing like 50 things at once and click something way to fast. Runs way smoother though once you mess with it.  :yesnod:

I've heard things good things about this Microsoft Mojave....

Seriously though, I just finished building my first computer and it wasn't really much of a decision: XP home SP2, OEM.  It's what I've been using before with no problems at all.  I just fail to see any major benefits with vista...New for the sake of being new?  I don't buy that.

Vista isn't bad, I have had very few problems since Service Pack 1 came out.

Maybe it will freeze once in a blue moon, but it's *very usable- not to mention looks way better than XP.

I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

as for Photoshop, just pirate the newest ver.

well that's it.. there seems to be a lot of people getting bunk dells.  and there are many people who say dells are crap (search yahoo).  someone i used to know repaired computers for a living and said he got a lot of dells coming in.  said they were cheaply made.  and mine definitely seems cheaply made.
