TheShroomeryMusic Exchange- Share your music! Give and receive real feedback!
    #7292788 - 08/14/07 12:03 AM (16 years, 5 months ago)

Welcome to the Shroomery Music Exchange

Inspired by threads such as Toddo's Shroomery Songwriting Contest as well as the new short story sharing thread, I was thinking it might be an intresting idea to bring together all of the Shroomerys musicians, songwriters, composers, or anyone who makes music of any kind, in more of a non-competitive atmosphere. The contests are alot of fun, and I in no way want to take away any light from it, i think its an incredibly creative idea and i love to participate. Enough explanation... here are the "rules" to this idea.

Post links (no more than 2 specific songs or even one link to a myspace or music space along the same lines) to music that you have written/recorded/composed/etcetc and receive feedback from others on the forum. Within your post and before your links, you must first listen to and leave feedback for at least one of the songs from at least the two previous posters. Provide sincere feedback not just "it was good!" or "it sucked". Try to remember that nomatter how bad you might think a style of music is, you should respect the fact that the person who is sharing it spent time and really put their emotions into the process. Make sure you post the username/song title for the feedback youre giving!

When you post links to your songs, include a name and, if you want, a brief description of the song(s).

I think this could be a great creative exchange. If enough attention/participation is given maybe we could get this stickied;). I know there are so many creative minds on this forum, we should be able to have a really amazing collection of music on here!

I suppose i'll start it off!

I'll start you with something alittle more easy to digest
This was my entry to the previous Shroomery Songwriting contest. Its a track I call Dream. All but the drum tracks are me and it was recorded at home. Dream

The second, and perhaps alittle harder to digest is a 10 minute epic short-story-song I call Azazel. It was actually a project for a class. We were assigned to write a short story, and to get out of writing, I asked if i could do a story song. Azazel was the result. Its a crazy little thing a friend and I came up with about an evil snake hatched in the forest and proceeds to "devour the remaining eggs from the nest" then goes on to wreak havok upon the rest of the forest. At the end he tries to steal food from the big bad bear who wakes up and they get in quite a fight. From then on the snake is the bears little henchman type thing. Pretty rediculous story. Far from any literary masterpiece, but it allowed for some pretty creative songwriting/production. Its a bit long, but i hope you'll listen through the whole thing. Some of it can be slow and goes on alittle too long...its a bit of a peter and the wolf type thing. Listen to the music while imagining whats going on in that poor forest! Azazel

I look forward to hearing reviews and listening to your music!!

I like this idea X2. In my very limited experience with trying to get the most out of peoples participation on here, I have found one must be clear and to the point. Make a VERY clear title with short 'guidelines' listed out clearly and well spaced. It will be much more inviting to look at and read.

And before starting anything to crazy, I think we should have a discussion on it. New ideas will only help the thread live longer. That way it will stand strong for more then a week.

I like the idea of having a feedback thread. Feedback is something many are not willing to give. I will be admit that I even avoid it sometimes. Its not always a pretty matter. But perhaps a thread dedicated to feed back of all arts. Short story's, Music, Poems, Pictures...ect. When one posts (as you said) one must also 'review' another piece of art.

All ideas of course.

I don't usually listen to this sort of music, but I have to say I was pretty impressed.

Dream: Wow. I liked that. Harmonically very sound, and all the instruments go together very well. Just the sort of thing I'd want to listen to after a hectic day. Only thing I could say is that there's nothing terribly memorable about it, though then again I don't know if that's really what you're aiming for.

Azazel: Wonderfully psychedelic. Odd sounds, strange effects, snippets of scary monologue, weird rhythms and melodies. This would be perfect for kicking a trip off with. It's technically excellent, as well - how long have you been producing music?

Well, if anyone's interested, I've got a couple of things I've whipped up.

The first, Morning Chillout, is something I made a year ago. It's a slow piece of atmospheric chillout electronica I made over the course of a few days while on holiday.

The second, S4ms4ra, is a high-octane drum and bass track I finished a few weeks ago. It wouldn't be inaccurate to say this is the pinnacle of my technical excellence at the moment as a electronic composer (good or bad as that may be ).

They can both be heard here. The player takes a few seconds to load.

--------------------
Raoul Duke: What Leary took down with him was the central illusion of a whole lifestyle that he helped create - a generation of permanent cripples, failed seekers, who never understood the essential old-mystic fallacy of the acid culture: the desperate assumption that somebody, or at least some force, is tending the light at the end of the tunnel.

S4ms4ra, i have a hard time getting into DnB type music, however i have great respect for the genre, though its not my favorite thing to listen to i did enjoy this track

morning chillout i really enjoyed, specifically the piano with phaser type thing over it. again, im far from knowledgeable about electronic music, the only production i really do is all live. Thanks so much for contributing!

dream: i love how the guitars were layered, it sounds so nice when the same notes struck on both sides. and like how a note would play on one side then louder on the other, like a warmup to it or something. very cool idea.
now i could say the timing was off at times for the guitar playing, but that could be intentional, and even if it wasnt, who says its bad. i dunno, its hard to think somethings good or bad because its just down to what were used to.. anyway yeah i liked it

mescaline clouds: cool how things were distinctly on either side. made me go into a kinda split brain trance! err i liked how mellow it was. dunno what else to say. oh yeah the fact it was called mescaline clouds made me think of the sky over a desert during the whole thing, it was a cool soundtrack for that scene

heres something short of mine. cba atm for big projects so i just do lots of little stuff..
i recommend headphones

Here's my minute long song. It's basically about chimps driving around in a fast car. I did it on Reason 2.5.

x2and2makes5, Dream is nice and relaxing but I loved Azazel. Nice sounds. The stuttered vocal sound is cool and I really like the high pitched guitar at 3:40. Everything fits together nicely.

Exagram, I like the Drum & Bass Version of Insane Person. It's aggressive!

Herfenara, I was sad when your short song ended. It was evolving so well. Give me More!

Brumal - mescaline clouds: Very nice. Some parts of the song remind of Interpol. I can imagine this song being in a movie. Cool title for the song too. Relaxing.

Curtdj - Ferrari chimps: Great! I love the chimp sounds! Very fun song to listen to. I love the description of the song! I can just imagine some chimps riding around in a car while listening to it.

Here are two of my songs on Last.FM:

Bridge Underwater - Love is Like (The Fish Song)

Bridge Underwater - Tools

I play all the instruments and record it at home

My influences are Neutral Milk Hotel, Animal Collective, and The Beatles. If you like those bands maybe you’ll like my music.

"Dream"
I'm not usually a fan of guitar-centered pieces, but I'd say you pulled this off very well. I'm impressed. The song is well-structured, and it's a great, well, dreamy background melody. In my opinion, the vocals are too quiet, but if that was your intention in making this track (to give it more of that dreamy feel), then good job on that. In that case, the track is fine how it is, as the subdued vocals do rather well to carry on the atmosphere of this piece. Well done.

"Morning Chillout"
As somebody else said, I rather enjoyed the phasing effect that overlays the piano. As with Dream, I'm not usually a fan of piano pieces, but this is an obvious exception. It is interesting how you've taken elements from harder dance tracks (the deep buzzing bass, the clap, and even the style of kick) and used them in a gentler fashion. I feel the song could have used some more percussion to busy things up a bit at certain parts, but even without the extra drums, this is still a nice, solid piece of music.

"S4ms4ra"
Holy shit. This is some quality drum n' bass ownage. Not only is this song fast, hard-hitting and very energetic, the main percussion line isn't as repetitive and monotonous as found in many DnB tracks, which is quite an accomplishment. The song itself is far from repetitious, as there are some well-placed breaks in the action and a steady introduction of new instruments, melodies and sounds to keep things fresh as it progresses. Of the DnB I've heard in my time, this definitely ranks among the best, if not THE best I've heard of this genre. Great work on this one.

I'd love to write a review for each track, but that would take me all night. I've listened to the others that were posted, and there aren't any in particular that I disliked; these just stood out from the others.

Here are two tracks of mine. Enjoy listening to them as much as I enjoyed making them:

Midnight Snack [Sunrise Remix] - Stream it - Download it
A remix of another original song of mine, "Midnight Snack". Both the original piece and this remix were produced while I was smoking a nice bowl. This is probably my personal favorite of what I've produced so far.

Milk and Cigarettes - Stream it | Download it
This is my shot at a song with drum and bass elements, with my own style of WHOA WTF LOTS OF DIFFERENT DRUMS GOING ON AT ONCE percussion lines.

I have many more tracks I've made over time, which can all be found here: www.begrimed.com/music.php (You don't have to listen to these; this is just for anybody who may want to hear more of my stuff if they enjoyed the two I posted for feedback - of note, is the original Midnight Snack song, and a remix of Milk and Cigarettes, entitled "Pancakes and Beer").

Keep the hits comin', guys.
