720p 1080i on....

I have a regular rear projection that I would like to someday trade in for an HDTV. Intil then I will be using my PC as a media center using XBMC. I want to get high def movies for when I get a better tv but in the mean time, will they play and look find on the screen?

They'll just be downscaled, but they'll look good enough all the same. Probably won't look any worse than 480i stuff, but it may even look better.

I'm assuming your tv is 480i btw, not sure what you meant by 720p and 1089i, assuming that means 1080i, but I still don't know what exactly you state that for. Either way, w/e. You'll be fine.

Yes 1080i. I ask because they are different format and I want to make sure they look normal on my tv rather then have them distorted. Any good HD torrent sites for movies? I need to dl backups of what I have

720p = 720 progressive
1089i = 1080 interlaced (minus the typo)

Both are HDTV resolutions.  Be careful buying low/mid range 1080i televisions, as most are actually "1080i compatible" and contain only 1366x768 pixels rather than 1920x1010 pixels.

Things are moving towards 1080p (1080 progressive scan), also known as Full HD.

As long as the play is configured correctly for the type of display, things will look correct.  The player/TV might downsample to get things to fit, but aspect ratios should be maintained.  (Incorrect aspect ratios is what leads things like a ball to appear as an oval.  Downsample can result in a jagged looking ball rather than a smooth ball, or odd moire patterns from time to time.)

For HD shit I mostly use private trackers, particularly demonoid and tv.torrents.ro. I don't have any invites to either atm, but I got my demonoid account from another member, just ask around. If you pm me and I'll hopefully remember and send you one once they become available to me. I'm not sure what triggers them to hand em out, but my ul:dl ratio is the fucking shit so I should be good in that regard.

Public tracker wise I just us BTJunkie, it's a big metasearch engine of 100+ other torrent sites.

Im not familiar with usenet. I have a Demonid account somewhere but I could never get the password changed and couldnt remember the random digits they sent me. Ill check it out.

looking around tonight I discovered this...

there are wmv-hd torrents and mvk files. do mvks contain the full dvd menues and all? I would like to get the whole package but is it just better to get the wmv?

mkv is an audio/video container, much like avi or the mpeg system layer (not to be confused with mpeg compression).  mkv allows subtitles and menus, chapters, etc.  It is the closest thing to DVD-video format that I have seen.  Depending upon how much effort the person put into the mkv, you may or may not have DVD-like menus.

None of the .mkv's or .wmv's I've gotten ever have menus. I prefer the .mkv's though personally. The wmv's generally seem to be compressed more ime.

Alright thanks! So an mvk has most of the dvd features like extras, commentary, and delete scenes? or just subtitles. I looked on demonoid and they didnt have too too many hd movies. Pretty much all I can find is wmv-hd. I am new to HD and I am excited to learn what will be the best for my needs.

another question...

blu ray or hd? I read somewhere that while blu ray is better, hd is just as good and cheaper. I also read that ps4 will most likly not even support bluray?

No, I'd bet you probably won't find any .mkv's with anything more than subtitles, or perhaps an alternate audio track if it's in another language but that's about it.

And yeah, I wouldn't use demonoid too often for HD movies. They do use .wmv's a lot for some reason which I don't like. For movies I use either demonoid or btjunkie, more often than not btjunkie as they have a better selection, more seeds/peers, and .mkv's. For shows I use tv.torrents.ro, not that that's any help for you though, or demonoid or btjunkie if tvtorrents is lacking.

I'm assuming you're asking what's the difference between hd-dvd's and blurays if that's the case go w/bluray, hd-dvd is dead and nothing more is being made in that format. The ps4 may or may not have a bluray player, but that's not really a concern at the moment. I personally feel that bluray is a half assed technology and it won't be well adopted before something better comes along. Digital distribution is already a big competitor and is only increasing.

If you're asking about what's better 'HD' or bluray then I think you're a little confused. Bluray is a media format that is used for HD movies, as well as PS3 games and maybe some other things. It's like a CD or DVD, it holds data, what the user/company decides to use that data for is up to them. HD just means.. well yunno, high definition. Bluray (movies) is HD. Hope that helps. :smile:

I know blu ray is HD but it is better quality HD yes? They have HD DVDs and Blu Ray. If both would be dead in the (near) future, then whats the point of taking all the time to dl them? Would it not just be better to get wmv hd because windows with always be compatible with wmv. Im not saying your wrong, Im right, just trying to figure out this situation. I hate format wars.

No, both Bluray and HD-DVD are 1080p and use similar, perhaps the same I dunno, video compression methods. The only advantage bluray has is it uses uncompressed PCM audio which if you've got a really really nice sound system and good ears you may be able to tell the difference.

When you download a .mkv or a .wmv they are both rips of bluray movies in most cases. They have been (I think) converted into a different video and audio format that is more commonly used on PC's. I could be wrong on the video conversion but it's irrelevant. .mkv's will always work as long as you have the codec installed, the same goes for .wmv's.

Well I plan on using XMBC so maybe just video will work rathern then the whole dvd. Although I do like the whole thing.

blu-ray and hd-dvd were 2 types of discs made to hold more content, and mainly driven by hd video.  HD-DVD has now stopped all production, no more players or discs will be made, so do not buy into this format if you choose too.

.mkv is just a container as suess was saying, it will be just as, if not MORE compatible than .wmv will be in the long run.  mkv can be played in any OS legally, as well as third party players such as the popcorn hour.  wmv is a windows only format, though it can be played in other os's, im not positive of the legality of this, though it is really not deterrent to play anyways.

download .mkv is my recommendation, and fuck the menus and deleted scenes/extras, that is all just a waste of space and time.  If you like a certain movie enough to want that, then buy the disc.  Personally, i never watch that crap, and a menu is just one extra thing for the player to load, and me to click through...im glad they are ripped out in mkv files for the most part.

Also, if you can figure out usenet, it is much better to download large files like highdef movies though, as it will reach much higher speeds than torrents will, and is also consistently fast.  While some torrents (very few) can really get going, on my connection i can get a solid 2MB/sec download going, though i limit it to 1500kb/s so as not to slow down surfing and whatnot.

Thanks supra. I read a while back about the format war between bluray and hddvd. I didnt realize that hddvd stopped making discs and players. Im glad I waited.

I didnt think about wmv not being able to play on another OS, glad you said that. I like the menues because then I can hit the movie to come on and it wont play until I hit the play button. Just something I like :shrug:

I was on #shroomery yesterday asking about this stuff and they said usenet. I am not at all familiar with this.

Yeah, usenet confused the shit out of me at first too...here is how i use it.

I buy a usenet server connection from giganews, it costs about $20 a month.  Then I also buy a membership at newzbin.com, which I think runs about 4 euros a month, so about $6 for me per month.

I use an application called SABnzbd+ for downloading the nzb (newzbin) files.  http://www.sabnzbd.org/

After that, i also add a firefox plugin called sabtab2 http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/6094 which makes it where you can simply click the small little check by the news listing, and it automatically adds it into sabnzbd for you and starts downloading.  here is a view of what is available on newzbin, thats a part of one page out of hundreds of news listings



so its not free, about $25 a month all together, but much better than waiting days for a torrent to finish, plus has almost everything i need...every once in a while i still need a torrent for some hard to find music or something.

so nzb is like a torrent. you open the nzb and it starts the download. But its all done within a browser? This sounds good I might jump on this bandwagon. They have a LOT of HD things? Im looking for movies and tv shows.

well, not really, an nzb is a file like a torrent is, but they work completely different.  With usenet/nzb files, there is no need to upload anything, just download...you also do not connect to other people, so its not p2p, you connect to a server and download all the 'news' from there, then all the text is put together to create the binary...however, you do not have to worry about all that, as the programs do it for you...just download nzb by using green check by listings, and it starts (if you use setup i mentioned), otherwise, just download the nzb itself, then open up sabnzbd web interface, and add the nzb through there.

It is tough to setup right at first, but once you get it, its really easy.
