Download the right codecs, and you can play in WMP.

Or, for niceness, download VLC Media Player, it's free.

+1 for vlc, it also helps if your pc is capable of playing hidef, forget about it on an old pc.

depending on what video card you have, you could use something that has been compiled with support for h.264 video offloading.

for some unknown reason, VLC does not support this. XBMC does though. im not sure what else does on windows.

the advantage is that all video playback is offloaded to the GPU so your CPU usage stays really low. this does not happen if you are playing an xvid or wmv.

my HTPC is a $300 Intel Atom machine but it can push full 1080p video because of the Nvidia Ion card in it. i only get the CPU usage up to about 8% when playing HD video.

yes you do but you dont get GPU offloading.

if you have the right hardware and software (the software need to be compiled with support for it) you can offload 100% of the video playback to the GPU. if you dont have this your CPU does most of the heavy lifting which slows down the rest of the machine.

this is specific to Nvidia hardware.

its called VDPAU on linux. i believe Nvidia's name for it is Cuda.

using a VDPAU enabled card i can play back hd video on a slow ass shitbox deluxe and not think twice about it. without it, the same machine would be brought to its knees.


EDIT: just so i dont sound crazy, here is a comparison of h.264 video playback with and without VDPAU (Video Decode and Presentation API for Unix).

my HTPC is a tiny Intel Atom based machine with Nvidia Ion graphics. when im using software that has not been compiled with support for VDPAU my CPU pegs out at 100%.

when im using software that has been compiled with VDPAU support my CPU usage is at about 8%.

ahh i found the windows equivalent to VDPAU. its called DxVA.

according to the wiki VLC is now supported. that must have recently changed.. it didnt before. you would have had to download the source code and recompile it by hand.

you will still need the proper hardware though. and it looks like Windows 7 is the only one that supports DxVA-HD.

yeah you dont need much at all for a home theater machine that does full 1080p.

like i said above mine was only $300 and it works perfectly.

i can mount it to the back of my TV too. :awesome:
