Downloading a Streaming Video
    #3687953 - 01/27/05 12:00 PM (13 years, 30 days ago)

I need to download a streaming video and I'm not sure how. I think I need some sort of downloading software that I type the file's address into? Can someone help me out? Thanks.

Uh, well, it depends on the protocol.  If it's HTTP or FTP (begins with http:// or ftp:// in the address) then you can (or should be able to, anyway) just plain download it like anything else.  If it's mms:// or some other stream format, you'll need a program to download it.  Also keep in mind that whatever software you are already viewing the streaming video with MUST download it somewhere, so it is sort of downloaded already...  whether it saves it as one coherent file or many small pieces and drops older ones, can't say

So uh, need more information to be more helpful

specifically: address type (first few letters before "://") file type (last few letters after '.'), your operating system, and the software you are using to view it now.

Here's the webpage for it. It's a real media file. I tried to just save it to disk, but it's only 4 KB and is still streaming. I'm on XP home.

Ok, it uses the real time streaming protocol (rtsp).  When you download the rm file, all you're getting is this:
Quote:

rtsp://132.239.253.173:554/UCSD_TV/5948AMasClaWit.rm?cloakport=8080,554,7070
--stop--
pnm://132.239.253.173:7070/UCSD_TV/5948AMasClaWit.rm?cloakport=8080,554,7070

Which basically tells real media player to use rtsp to get the actual data.

StreamDown should do the trick, quoth the webpage:
Quote:

CoCSoft Stream Down is a streaming media download tool. It supports not only HTTP and FTP download, but also streaming media download such as RTSP, MMS, MMSU, MMST.

If that doesn't do it for you, search around for other rtsp related programs
