1080i vs 1080p

What are your experiences in this field?

I just bought a top noch blue rave drive for my tower PC. I have a ati radeon 6870 HD card. In windows resolution options, theres a choice to select max resolution for my 60 inch TV monitor, which is 1920 x 1080. However it does not say if it is 1080i or 1080p!! Whats up with that? Where can i see more info on this?

Also got a satellite box connected to same 1080p TV, however this satellite box only does 1080i max, which still looks good, but got me wondering :smile:

Interlacing (the "i" in 1080i) trades spacial resolution for temporal resolution. In other words, moving things, such as motion pictures look better (for a given bandwidth), but stills, such as a static web page, look worse. Interlacing works because of how our eyes and brain process dynamic images. Progressive (the "p" in 1080p) uses more bandwidth and will always look better than interlacing (for a given resolution).

I know the difference between i and p.

What i want to know is which one is reproduced by my graphics car, as it simply says "1920 x 1080" in the settings menu, but doesnt say whether it is i or p, i suspect PC graphics are all 1080p :shrug:

I thought 1080i systems were used because they require half the bandwidth? Surely the refresh rate is the defining factor for clarity of motion?
