buying new t.v. need help

so im reposting this. it was in the pub but im not getting shit for help.
im trying to spend under $1200
im looking for something big. anywhere between 50-60in

what should i look for in a tv? whats good these days?

1) more than 1 HDMI port
2) can do 1080P resolution
3) 120Hz(if LCD), 240 if you can afford it

Samsung makes some good LCD tv's.

I've heard that the new LED tv's are better than everything, but I haven't seen one yet.

i just got a 52 lcd samsung 1080p 60hz for 1100.  it looks great, i have 20/20 vision and would still need bionic eyes to tell the difference between my tv and a better one if both have been calibrated properly.  before you buy one, try to find the calibration settings for it (can usually be found at cnet).  having to pay someone to calibrate it can cost up to 300 but can quadruple the life of the tv.

Do not get less than 4 HDMI ports (3 in a pinch)

I had a 55" Samsung 60Hz. Kept it for a few weeks. Sold it. Got the 240Hz. A dead blind man could see the difference.

Nowadays, plasma and LCD technology are very mature.  My plasma is nearly 5 years old.  It'll be interesting to see how much of a difference it makes when I finally upgrade.

I'd start online, find some reviews and narrow it down to 3-4.  See if you can view them in the store and/or side by side.  Get the one you like best.

The number of HDMI ports you need depends on what you do with it.  Personally, I only need two:  I run DVD and the cable box to my set. 3 would be nice, in case I ever wanted to connect a laptop, but that is quite rare.

I only use one HDMI connection, for my computer.  The only other thing that gets plugged in is the power cord.

One thing I havent seen mentioned is the contrast ratio.  I read an article that showed it was just as, if not more, important than its frequency and resolution - in terms of what people report as looking good or bad.

I only use one hdmi on my tv, since i have a receiver that takes 3 inputs, to pass the sound through the stereo.  Like many have said, i recommend samsung, i have an ln46a650 (46" 650 series) and calibrated it myself, its been great...when i finally upgrade here in a few years it will be a 3d capable LED backlit lcd, but thats a while away, this one I have had for 2 years now and is as nice as the day i bought it, well better, since its calibrated...lol

calibration is great, once you know about what it does, it will really help you understand that just cuz a $5000 looks great on the showroom floor doesn't mean a $1000 set won't look just as good if you know what you are doing.  i have a samsung 52b550 and couldn't be more happy with it.

Wow every tv mentioned was a samsung, i have an older one, and my dad has a newer one they are nice tv's but I'm not going to get another one when its time, there are so many others out there that blow away samsung.

idk if was mentioned but u want a tv with a low ms (mili second) rating, 8 is awful and i think 4 is good as it gets atm, with 5 being the most commonly used. This is important if you play video games or watch action movies.

Some Walmarts have the 47" Philips 1080p, 120hz, 4 HDMI ports LCD for just $800. Works fine for the deal it was.
