DID YOU KNOW? A daily interesting cultivation fact.. Adding new facts every day.
    #9387073 -

Let's see how long I can keep this up.

I'll try and post an interesting fact related to cultivation every day.

#1 DID YOU KNOW...

That Drierite and Gypsum are actually the same chemical?

Wikipedia
Quote:
Calcium sulfate is a common laboratory and industrial chemical. In the form of γ-anhydrite (the nearly anhydrous form), it is used as a desiccant. It is also used as a coagulant in products like tofu.[1] In the natural state, unrefined calcium sulfate is a translucent, crystalline white rock. When sold as a color-indicating variant under the name Drierite, it appears blue or pink due to impregnation with cobalt chloride, which functions as a moisture indicator. The hemihydrate (CaSO4.~0.5H2O) is better known as plaster of Paris, while the dihydrate (CaSO4.2H2O) occurs naturally as gypsum.

Anhydrous form means without water inside the crystals (taken out by sunlight or applying heat) and hydrates are the same crystals once they contain water.

So in fact spent Drierite which has absorbed water has turned into gypsum.

BUT DO NOT USE DRIERITE AS IF IT WERE GYPSUM. IT CONTAINS COBALT WHICH IS A HEAVY METAL AND YOU DON'T WANT TO BE EATING IT.

Enjoy the trivia

#2 DID YOU KNOW...

COPELANDIA = PANAEOLUS  but PANAEOLUS ≠ COPELANDIA

Copelandia is a subgenus of the Panaeolus genus. It consists of all the Panaeolus mushrooms that contain psilocybin AND bruise blue.

So whenever someone talks about Copelandia cyanescens or Copelandia tropicalis you should know that they can also be called Panaeolus cyanescens or Panaeolus tropicalis.

Remember: The reverse is not true. While all cope are pans, not all pans are copes.

#3 DID YOU KNOW...

That shrooms can be grown (to some extent, that does not mean they will do well) on just about anything that contains cellulose. That includes cotton, paper, cardboard, woodchips, etc.

Here are some pictures.

TO SEE THE IMAGES GO TO PAGE 2 OF THIS THREAD.

#4 DID YOU KNOW...

That we pastaurize instead of sterilize poo because the lower temperatures of pasteurization allow certain thermophillic (heat loving) organisms to survive, and these organisms are very beneficial.

Well, I didn't know about the drierite/gypsum comparison, but methamphetimine experience taught me that anhydrous means without water.

In fact, for those dopers here, it's possible to cook regular store-bought ammonia into anhydrous ammonia, and save yourself the time from tryin to steal it.  ^_^

Regular desiccant doesn't contain cobalt. So can it be used as gypsum in substrates? I can't find gypsum but where I live desiccant is in a lot of food packaging.

can you "charge" the gypsum to form drierite substitute?

No...  Most food packaging desiccant I see is silica gel.  Some other dessicants are calcium chloride, not calcium sulfate.

Calcium sulfate is also known as chalk.

Yes, but you'd have to be able to measure the temperatures and hydration levels accurately, at least, for it to work well.

Edit: the info was useless, but here it is:

If you bake chalk at 2000*F you get lime (I thought you only had to bake it at like 450 or something, quite useless at 2000..)

Yeah, but when your recharging drierite you don't need to convert it to lime

I don't remember the temperature, but we baked the pink drierite to get blue drierite for our dessicators (big, thick glass things that you hold moisture sensitive chemicals in) and it wasn't an issue.

Also, can't see why you couldn't do the same with plain ole gypsum...a desiccant that I don't see alot of spoken word about around here is Magnesium Sulfate aka Epsom Salts, and you can just bake that the same way.

Its about 300 farenheit used to recharge lab drierite, and about the same for MgSO4

Drierite comes in two flavors, indicating and non-indicating.

The indicating has a small amount of colbalt chloride added which changes from blue to pink depending on how much moisture has been absorbed into the crystal matrix.

Drierite my have the same basic chemical formula as plain old gypsom, however, drierite's crystalline structure is different.

If you overheat drierite the structure changes and makes it less efficiant or worst case completly denatured.

You have to be careful when saying these things because chalk can either refer to calcium carbonate (which heated up gives Calcium Oxide A.K.A. Lime) or to Calcium Sulphate A.K.A. gypsum, which when heated up gives you good old regular plaster.

#3 How a mushroom fruitbody grows in size

Quote:
Understanding how a mushroom fruit-body grows in size is critical to optimal crop cultivation.

Plants and animals grow through cell division.
Meaning, to get bigger they have to produce more cells, thereby increasing their mass in size.

Mycelium also grows by cell division.

However, a mushroom fruit-body does not grow by cell division.

A fully formed immature mushroom contains nearly the same number of cells that the large mature mushroom will have at its peak size.

How an immature mushroom exponentially increases in size very rapidly is by cell enlargement.

How fruit-body cell enlargement occurs, is that the mycelium pumps moisture by capillary action into the fruit-body cells, hyper- expanding, and inflating them with water. The same way a balloon expands exponentially in size, when you fill it with water.

A mushroom fruit-body can increase in size as fast as water can be pumped into its cells. That is how a mushroom can grow from an immature mushroom into a large mature mushroom, in a very short span of time.

Other than inherent genetic limitations, and nutrient availability, the size of a fruit-body is only limited by the availability & amount of moisture that mycelium can pump into it.

Another critical growth factor is that, mushroom fruit-bodies have no protective skin.

Mushroom fruit-body cells exchange gases directly with the surrounding atmosphere. Consequently, as mushroom fruit-bodies begin to expand in size, they require very high ambient humidity in their immediate environment, in order to grow to optimal fruit-body size.

Deprived of, or without high humidity in their immediate environment, fruit-body cells will lose moisture faster than it can be "pumped" into them. Resulting in an immediate drying effect that will cause abnormal growth, stunting, stems to split, caps to crack, and/or total abortion of all growth.

It is impossible to distill acetic acid due to it forming an azeotrope with water. The only practical method of concentrating vinegar is to form sodium acetate, dehydrate to a near anhydous state, add to sulfuric and distill. This should leave one with nearly glacial acetic acid.

One can run that thru a tube furnace which will turn it into ketene and then add that to additional glacial acetic acid.

Alternatively, one can acylate some glacial acetic acid with phosphorus trichloride and add that to the sodium acetate to form the anhydride.

Lastly, its possible to use benzotrichloride or benzalchloride with sodium acetate to form the anhydride. In the case of benzalchloride a nice by-product is formed... benzaldehyde.

Or you can just buy the shit.

Prestone Driveway Heat is much cheaper for use as a desiccant than Damp Rid and a heck of a lot easier to find this time of the year.

IIRC you can get it at Autozone.

The MSDS says that it's anywhere from 90-90% calcium chloride with a percent or so of sodium, potassium, and strontium chloride... the remainder is water weight.

Actually, that depends on if you have indicating or non-indicating Drierite.

Ergo, larger mushrooms only contain more water? If you harvest and dry large pins/immature mushrooms will you be getting the same amount of psilocybin? Does not allowing a pin to break it's veil somehow signal the mycellum to stop producing? I'm wondering why it's not common to pick fruits before they have broken their veil & flip the amount of flushes more quickly...?
