Storage
    #7388096 - 09/09/07 12:54 PM (16 years, 4 months ago)

I have seen a lot of different ideas on storage. I need to fix my mushrooms. I have been storing them in 2 zip lock bags in a dark and cool drawer for a couple of days. They have become soft. What should I do?

store them in a sealed glass jar with a few lil baggies of desiccant.

or...

dry them, grind them into powder, and pack it tightly into half-pint jars with a few oxygen absorbers and store them in the freezer.

OR!...
do the alcohol extraction tek. thats what i do. i have a vial of extracted crystals stored in everclear that i've had for about 2 years now without any loss of potency(yet)

Everyone has their own preference. Light, moisture, and oxygen are your enemies here. Personally, I think vacuum sealing is the way to go. Dry completely, grind into a powder, place in a half-pint mason jar, and vacuum seal it. Store in a cool dark place.

silica gel is probably the most common. You can find it in craft stores for drying flowers.

Drierite [Re: danzick]
    #7389899 - 09/09/07 09:46 PM (16 years, 4 months ago)

I like Drierite, which is manufactured by W A HAMMOND DRIERITE CO LTD. Drierite is the standard desiccant for most applications in research laboratories. Both indicating and regular versions are made and come in various sizes from a powder to 1/4" granules. The regular Drierite is >99.5% CaS04 (anhydrous calcium sulfate) and is white. The indicating version is about 98% CaS04, 2% CoCl2 (cobalt chloride) and changes color from blue to pink on absorbing water. Because regular is cheaper, I like to mix at least a 5:1 ratio of regular to indicating. Drierite can be regenerated by baking in an oven to remove absorbed water and can be reused many times (must be put into an airtight container while still hot from the oven). The indicating version tends to lose the CoCl2 after several uses but the product will still work for drying. It seems to me like the cobalt chloride is a coating over the calcium sulfate. Anyway, a search for Drierite will bring up tons of places to get it, including the manufacturer themselves.

As for storage, I put Drierite in the bottom of colored jars or foil wrapped mason jars, top it with piece or two of window screen, and put what ever needs to stay dry on top.
