It is a felony to pick psilocybin mushrooms in all 50 states if you know what they are.

It is legal to pick psilocybin mushrooms if you don't know what they are because the controlled substance act specifies that you have to know that its a drug to be guilty of the offense. 

Florida is the only state where this has been tested.

the moment you knowingly possess a hallucinogenic mushroom, you've already passed that barrier.
and even if you possess it and your not knowledgeable, if your caught, how are you gonna convince the State of Washington that you had no clue after you go and tell an entire classroom of people.

some of the time, if they catch you with fresh, they confiscate them, ticket you for destroying vegetation, and send u off with basically a tap on the wrist.
however, its quite often they will just straight-up arrest your ass, their wages depend on your mistakes, and catching a felon would give any cops Ego a nice polishing...

Exactly. However, trying to tell a park ranger in Astoria that you have no clue what the 5 pounds of Azures in your backpack are will most likely land you a felony. Telling the police officer you're taking a giant sack of the same type of mushroom back to your house to do microscopic spore observations for further identification most likely wont fool him either.

Be smart. Dress tasteful. Don't look like you just left a Kottonmouth Kings concert. From prior experience, kicking and crouching around bushes in a hoodie and fitted cap will have you approached quickly. Wear some nice slacks, and tuck in a collared shirt. Sound intelligent. Have 4 or 5 paper bags on you and pick mushrooms other than psilocybes as well. Have a camera and field guide with you. Draft and print a fake assignment for your "mycology class" which includes areas to describe mushrooms you've found (Pileus/Lamellae/Stipe/Spores/Habitat/Other Comments) and fill out half of the assignment. When you're picking and people walk by, don't look hurried or stop. Act like you know what you're doing and you know there is nothing wrong with it.

In other words, don't be an idiot. Spend a few extra minutes to dress yourself like the adult you are and pack some extra supplies to back up your story. It's a lot better than felony.

I always dress nice when hunting, it really does make people less suspicious. Good advice. Can't say I've gone far enough to make fake homework but the Mycology class excuse is a good one as well.

Hello.  I've never posted here before, but this forum has been really useful to me.  This was my first season trying to hunt cyanescens (I've been hunting edibles for a few years), and I've found several patches - three on the coast and one in Portland - so I'm happy.

Anyway, I wanted to write in response to two things.  First, for the people discussing whether the season is dead or not, my patch in Portland is now starting to fruit more heavily than ever.  With the recent rains, the number of pins in each flush is probably quadruple what it was three weeks ago when I first found it.  I guess it's because Portland is more southerly and therefore warmer?

Second, I haven't seen many posts about confirmed finds in the city of Portland.  I remember one from several weeks ago, but nothing recently.  Anyone else finding anything in the city?  I'm sort of surprised that no one else has found my patch - it's in a public, close-in place that seems like an obvious candidate for cyan habitat.

I have no photos, but I harvested today (a small paper cup full) and they're dehydrating at my feet as I write this.  It's nice having a patch five minutes from my house.

i know of 3 sites in portland that are fruiting now, yes. 2 are low yield and i'm pretty sure i have them to myself. 1 is pretty rich and i am definitely not the only person visiting. some lucky bastard hauled off maybe 150 dry grams worth a couple hours before i was going to collect, about 2.5 weeks ago after the good rain. that rich site needs some good rain for pins to mature; many are already going black.

I went to Astoria yesterday, people have wiped the parks clean and we ran out of sunlight quickly, so we crashed out in the car for the night and headed to gearhart at first light, took me 5 minutes to find our only patch from the hunt other than the amanitas, but they are pretty impressive for how small of an area they covered, HERE'S SOME CYAN PORNZ!!!






(there's more to go with the headless stems, just printing so I can spread our joy for others to discover)


anyhow, the first pic was about 10 mins ago, flipped my little friend up into my mouth right after the pic and im already coming on. To add to the previous discussion before I begin to crawl into my own face, I had a little experiment when we first arrived in Astoria, I threw on a ridiculous shirt with some fungus from Mario bros. that read "What happens in the mushroom kingdom stays in the mushroom kingdom", some ragged jeans, and the ancient hat in the first pic and began to take pictures and notes (amanitas are legal so I had no worries picking them) to see how quickly I would be approached, didn't take more than 20 minutes of walking slowly and staring at the ground with camera in hand before I was "pulled over" I explained that I was documenting species for my own records in a very professional manner, they played their games with me for about 5 minutes before I let them search me (with a giant smile on my face) and they warned me not to pick any "boomers" and pulled away, when I picked the cyan patch I was practically in someones backyard on the beach dressed in nice khaki slacks and a long sleeve shirt, I was there for probably 40 minutes and received nothing but waves and smiles, be safe guys! :smile:

Nice finds! My patch was raped a couple days ago by some idiot so I replanted some mycelium around in different wood chips and walking trails. Last year I saw squirrels digging up mycelium that I planted in the ground or in wood chips, hopefully they don't do that this year.

Look in new lawn around new housing developments. That's where I have the best luck.

Hmmmm... nope don't think that was me!  I honestly haven't been out that much this season, it's a pretty bad one.  Been finding lots of small patches but nothing worth picking or even taking pics of.  @cro and I have a huge patch in Bham that has been excellent the last 2 years and there is nothing there this year.  The substrate is in great condition, I just think the weather has been off this year.

Might go check some spots later today or tomorrow... just feeling unmotivated this season.  We need some rain!

Those 'wild cyans' look a little friscosish to me... Could just be your pics though.

Anyways, My normal spot (garden in my front yard:grin:) hasnt been fruiting to well since I harvested last month. I foolishly thought my season was coming to a close until I stepped out back this morning to give my mum a hand.

To my surprise I found these guys


Im guessing the woodchips she laid down a year or two ago(thanks walmart) gave rise to these. Although ive had wild patches growing in the grasses near my old woodpile on ther other side of my house for years. Now theyre spread all over the place and they keep popping up in new places

My other new patch in the woodchips was near the original wild guys so I just figured the spores spread that way but these are way on the other side of my property... who knows. I have lots more pics to take
