Some people prefer a blade that curves in the opposite direction. Can't seem to find a pic to accurate portray it. Careful with folding knives, the temptation is to put it in your pocket but you can easily be accused of concealing a deadly weapon if the blade is too long .

Get a mushroom hunting knife like this one.
Mine cost about $15 and the brush folds away into the handle. It's great for cleaning away dirt and grass.

Yea, that is what I was trying to describe when I wrote, "curves in the opposite direction".

Cool knife,
I use THIS:

Actually the main reason that i bring that with me (in the woods) is for knocking down spider webs in my path before they get me in the face or slicing some dead plant matter out of the way. I try not to kill living plants though botany is one of my hobbies. I can turn shrooms over to check the gills without even bending over hehe.

Thats a pretty good deal there from fungi perfecti, I might want to add that to my collection some time.
Right now i just use a regular folding/locking pocket knife for disecting or cutting fungi. And the big one for hackin through the swamps.

I think probably the most important feature is that the blade needs to lock in position. I've seen too many accidents with people who had a knife where the blade didn't lock and they got careless.
In general, I just go cheap on the knife. After all, you're going to be digging in the ground with it. Think in terms of scraping the blade firmly on rocks while digging and you probably won't want to spend very much money on anything fancy.
I do recommend getting one of those cheap knife sharpeners they sell at sporting goods places. They only run around $5 and allow you to quickly and easily undo the damage the digging does to the knife edge.
Happy mushrooming!

Where did you get that??? Never saw one of those.
I just use a fairly long, locking pocket knife withOUT the serrations. I found that the serrated kind don't cut as clean for me.
