well apparently a guy ate 100 fruits in public to show it was not poisonous.  it was never poisonous unless something pre historically happened in the americas...

and the sorta point was the nice smell is the semi sort or irratant more then anything on the leaves and stems.

Tomatoes, potatoes and eggplants are members of the Nightshade family; a family of plants that contains many well known poisonous members. These plants have varying levels of alkaloids that have steroidal properties. Though the fruit is now known to be safe, poisoning can occur from the ingestion of the leaves, vines, or unripe fruit. There have been reports of livestock being poisoned by crossing fences to forage through a tomato patch and even by farmers adding the suckers culled from their tomato vines to the livestock feed.
The annual garden tomato belongs to a group of from ten to twelve species, all of which are closely related to the deadly nightshade. For centuries the fruit was thought to be poisonous and it was planted in gardens as an ornamental. Although we now know that fresh tomatoes are harmless, the foliage and vines contain alkaloid poisons. Children have been severely poisoned from making a tea from the leaves, and livestock have died from eating the foliage and vines. Digestive upsets consist of nausea, vomiting, abdominal pains, constipation or bloody diarrhea. Nervous effects are sluggishness, abnormal flow of saliva, laboured breathing, trembling, weakness, loss of feeling, and paralysis.

Oh yes,Tomatoes are my favorite plant to grow, and one of my favorite fruits.I was just showing that the actual plant itself, and not the fruit is poisonous. So,in fact back in the old days they were partly right when they said the plant was poisonous.
