Language and Emotion
    #9327915 -

Do certain languages enable people to express a wider range of emotions than english(as I suspect some do) and if one can provide examples of this could you post what examples you have in mind?

That's a good question. It's always seemed mysterious to me. If your language does not describe a certain emotion do you aware of it?

Body language means different things to different cultures, though. Eye contact while speaking, for instance is considered a sign of respect in most western cultures. It's assumed that you're paying attention and are interested in what is being said. In other cultures, in Asia for instance, keeping eye contact with a superior or an elder may be understood as aggression or disrespect.

im not really 100% but the chinese language has a enormous range of characters that even most chinese people cant remember all of them. this wide range of characters and symbols could possibly describe emotions and feelings that most cultures could not even begin to understand because they are not capable of describing it.

I think you should ask yourself first if there has ever been an emotion that you could not describe in English. If the answer to that is yes, then there can be a possibility another language may fill the gap. Don't forget to keep in mind that maybe there is a word for what your are experiencing, you just may not know it yet.

How language is used varies from person to person... some are more able to express themselves eg. Poe, Shakespeare, having a mastery. Others are not so lucky. So the user of the language can take it higher than it has been previously.

Here's my attempt to take language a little higher:

The English language has quite a vast array of words to choose from, and I would also say speakers of English, "cant remember all of them."

I would go as far as saying, few have any remarkable grasp of the English language.

(Myself included obviously.)

But also, if there are words to describe the currently un-described...even if we were to learn the sound and appearance of that word, would we be able to understand it?
We learn other languages, by translating them...if there is nothing to translate something into, how else can the connection be made?

I think each language should be able to express all emotions, poetry and stuff.. and yeah like figmentfragment said, translation is also a good indication.

I do know a lot of languages have words that don't exist in other languages, but afaik you can always find a set of other words or an expression to describe the same concept.

emotions are body feelings, memory and images, in combination.
always there is some memory of a (good, bad or indifferent) body feeling connected to some image or sound scene or sequence.

each culture has their own reserve of customary images and associated feelings.

my wife is greek.

many of the greek sayings and expressions produce images and feelings that are things I would rather not put together that way.
(hard to get rid of some of the ideas once in place too)
you could say they are unique cultural emotions.

i don't think it is necessary to feel everything the same way as everybody else in every  other culture.
good to be able to, to be sensitive, or sympathetic;
but tedious to be doing it all the time.

Namaste is sanskrit for: Greetings (or fare thee well) to the spark of consciousness that originally came from God that presently resides within and animates the physical form that I see here before me now.

I think that is just a little bit more expressive than "Hi".

This is not an emotion but Eskimos have several explanations of the word snow.
