generating random numbers
    #9309559 -

Can a person generate their own random number?

It seems to me that as soon as I think of the number, it is no longer random to me, so is it even possible to generate your own?

I know computer programs generate random numbers, but it is always based on a seed.  A simple way is to use the number of seconds since a past event as the seed, then use arithmetic to trim the number into a range.  That way the seed will never be the same twice, but still... if I knew the variables the program used to generate that random number, is is no longer random! I can predict it!

Is the only way get a truly random number is to ask another person for one...?

I don't understand these random number theories.

Think of it like a program. Random numbers only APPEAR random.

What's this fuss about true randomness?
Perhaps you have wondered how predictable machines like computers can generate randomness. In reality, most random numbers used in computer programs are pseudo-random, which means they are a generated in a predictable fashion using a mathematical formula. This is fine for many purposes, but it may not be random in the way you expect if you're used to dice rolls and lottery draws.

RANDOM.ORG offers true random numbers to anyone on the Internet. The randomness comes from atmospheric noise, which for many purposes is better than the pseudo-random number algorithms typically used in computer programs. People use RANDOM.ORG for holding draws, lotteries and sweepstakes, to drive games and gambling sites, for scientific applications and for art and music. The service has existed since 1998 and was built and is being operated by Mads Haahr of the School of Computer Science and Statistics at Trinity College, Dublin in Ireland.

People do terribly when they're asked to generate strings of random digits.

If you want randomness, look to radioactive decay.

if youre going to think like that then there really can never be a random number.

the best way I've found to generate random #s is dice.
Or if not a complete dork and don't have any 20 sided dice laying around you can flip coins or something.

There a random number.

You can find patterns everywhere.

1+1=2    7-3=4    9-8=(7+3-9)    8-4=(6-2)    3+8=(7+4)      6+7-2=3+2+9-7+3+1)    8-9=7+4-(3+9)    8-6=(5-8+7-2)    4+6=(9x2-8)    7+1=(4x2)      3+4=7      9+8=[7x4-(9+2)]      7+4=(2x7-3)      2+7=[4-9+8+(2x3)]      7x4=(9+8+2+7+3)      47-23=[49-23-(7+4-9)]      8-7=(2+3-4)  9-7+2      3+9=[4-7+(2x3)+9]    7+4=9+2      3+7=4+9-3    7=7

or sequential numbers

1 12 7 34 987 3 98 46 23 87 4 67 232 9731 89 7 43 908 65 0 87 246092 87 14 234 7 987 492740270 32 7498 23 74 98 27 34 07 23 049 23 740 987 234 097 23 09470 23 97409 23 7409377

Uh oh.  Random.org says its based on atmospheric noise.  That would seem random, but if random.org and I were to both use the same algorithm, using the same atmospheric noise data as a seed, at the same time, we'd come up with the same number.

Not random.
