Instant Death for my Rye Casing :(

I just birthed and cased my first batch of rye grain. I tested the water content until I had just so much water that the kernels were saturated but didn't burst. The quarts of rye were sterilized at 15psi for one hour. They sat in the dark at room temp for 11 days before being shaken after noticing considerable growth at the bottom of the jar. After shaking (what I thought looked like) complete colonization occured soon after. I may have birthed two early?? I cased with 50/50+ casing mix sterilized at 15psi for an hour as well. That was on Friday. Tonight, wednesday was the first night I looked at them. They incubated one day after casing before recieving light, they have had automatic humidization and air exchange 6 times a day. Good conditions and 70degrees. 5 days later and they are completely covered with greed mold.... completely. I've never even seen that when casing BRF. Did I use the wrong casing mix? Does anyone have any ideas? Let them sit in the jar longer? Thank you!

It all sounds fine to me, I can't imagine what went wrong. You only incubated the casing for one day? Did the casing layer get colonised at all in that one day?

I was out of town over the weekend, so I didn't get to watch it daily... I don't know, total green colonization takes weeks after fruit stops on my BRF casings .... so I can't picture that amount of uglyness in 5 days. Is that the wrong casing mix for rye? Lower humidity? Thanks again

Does anyone else have any ideas? I want to start more, but there is no point in working in a bad direction. Thanks.

Presoak the grain next time. You can add a little Hydrogine Peroxide as well as long as you are innoculating from mycelia (not spores) culture. Green mold is spread through the air, so if you are going to case the rest of the grain, try to filter your air a little better in the terrarium (filter disks and/or HEPA filter nearby) and possibly try pasteurized horse compost (the bacteria and nematodes left in this spawn will compete with the mold but not the mycelium); also wait a little longer to initiate pinning (certainly longer than a day!). The mycelium probably wasn't strong enough in the casing when you put it in the terrarium so it couldn't outgrow the mold. Otherwise your technique is sound.

Does presoaking change the water content I should use? Right now I've found that 225ml of water and 200g of rye works out very well with very little bursting as long as my temp was good durring the PC proccess. How long do you presoak? I'm innoculating with a spore syringe, not mycelium.

On another thought, when I have cased with BRF and 50/50+ before I would wait for full colonization, case, allow to sit in the dark for 24/48 hrs and then give light. That was what I was told to do on these forums and it worked great. Does rye work differently? What method would you use?

what is your automatic humidity setup? I would say it was likely oversaturated and allowed to bring in unsteril air. Also, i might have pasturized instead of sterilizing.

It wasn't near filth at all. It was under my bed, which doesn't get much distrurbance so I would assume few contaminants. I have had many successful BRF casings under there following the same methods, so I don't know what to think about my problems this time. The air that comes in runs through two filters my humidifier came with, I'm sure they aren't HEPA, but they do work... plus, it never bothered the BRF.
