All active Gyms taste bitter.

You did get my point about smell being only one of the characteristics, didn't you?

G. luteofolius does not taste bitter to me, but if I give the same mushroom to most other people it will taste very bitter.

That probably has to do with your taste buds more than the mushroom.  Which would also explain some of the edibles you seem to enjoy.  :lol:

In the monograph it is described as bitter; all of the actives are.

please don't post this kind of stuff.  i think it's best to wait for awhile after you have done your exact research.  in fact i will propose that it be necessary to "WALK DONT RUN" with the VENTURES. ASSMOTHERfffUCKER.

Yes i got your point, but not all active gyms taste bitter.

I have cum across gyms 3 times that did not taste bitter, they tasted kinda good.


Near the bottom of the 3rd paragraph, it says not all gyms taste bitter even when they are supposed to.

That's interesting information, weiliiiiii.  I wonder where Kuo came up with that.  Hesler's monograph, one of the resources Kuo quotes, says, "Taste, on the other hand, is bitter in many species of Gymnopilus, and is more constant for the species than odor."1  Barnhart, who put together A Trial Key to GYMNOPILUS in the Pacific Northwest, another resource Kuo quotes says, "Taste is usually bitter (terrestris and arenicola among exceptions)."  Gaston Guzmán and his wife, who you have corresponded with via e-mail, wrote the bulk of resources Kuo quotes, yet I saw nothing in their papers that mentions specimens of actives that aren't bitter when they should be.  David Arora's citation by Kuo is completely incorrect.  His cites pp. 959 of Mushrooms Demystified which is a picture of David holding a gigantic Morel.  That basically leaves us with no accurate references or resources for his claim.  All we have are the experiences of a few on this message board.  I've been eating Gyms since 1991 and I have never eaten an active that wasn't bitter as hell.  Dr. Ethan Russo, author of Handbook of Psychotropic Herbs, interviewed me in the early 90's and wanted to publish my experiences with Gymnopilus because he couldn't find anyone else that had them.  I declined.  I don't know where that leaves us.  I would suggest that if you ever find another active Gymnopilus that isn't bitter you do something to have it verified.  That would be a significant contribution to mycology for those that are interested in this species.

If you have any other information I would happy to read it.

As a side note, Gymnopilus fulvosquamulosus, a near lookalike for Gymnopilus luteofolius, isn't bitter.  Perhaps that's what others have eaten.

BlimeyGrimey maintains that the G. luteofolius' he has eaten have not been bitter. Is Gymnopilus fulvosquamulosus active? If it is not, then in is not likely that it would be confused for G. luteofolius.

I'm not doubting anyone here, however, numerous collections of Gymnopilus luteofolius were tested in Helser's monograph.

Florida, Idaho, Tennessee, Michigan, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Texas and Washington.  All were bitter.

As far as I know, Gymnopilus fulvosquamulosus is not active though it does change olive when FeSO4 is applied to the flesh.  The only collection studied was from Michigan.

Perhaps the taste buds of certain people react differently.

That is the most probable reason. Taste is subjective and some people probably don't sense bitterness as much as the next person.

There are some stories about McIlvaine, one of the pioneers of American mycology, who ate just about everything.  Some of the things he described as delicious nearly all others who ate them said tasted nasty.  Poor bastard.  He wife must have had an easy job feeding him.

there's a type of paper that is coated with a chemical that only half of all people can taste. it could be something like that.
