Psilocybe baeocystis ? ? (pics added! Thanks!)
    #865522 - 09/05/02 02:30 PM (19 years, 18 days ago)

Well, I was out hiking yesterday and I found what I believe to be Psilocybe baeocystis... I'm not sure though. I've never picked them, or any magics, so I'm wondering if any of you can help me identify these babies...

When picked they went anywhere from light to deep blue depending on the mushroom. The stalks are hollow. They have veils that just dissapear once the cap pops.. Really wispy veils.. The gills don't attach to the stalk, but I haven't had time to do a spore print quite yet. Once that is done I'll post again with the color of it, etc. But in the meantime here are some pics, I'm hoping someone can help me out here. The bruising might not be apparent in the pictures, but even now (a day later) they still have a purplish tint to them.. The gills themsellves seem to be stained a purplish/brown? Oh yeah, and the smell is very mushroomy..

I hope this is enough information, if there is anything more I can provide please post.

Thanks!

Sorry about the trouble with the images. I'm not used to Geocities and I'm still trying to figure it out... Can anyone see these images?

No. Upload them to the shroomery and then link to them. Try reading this for more help with images and whatnot.

All these were found in the Pacific NW, found growing on or under dead logs and stumps mostly.. Sometimes in clearings amongst the trees. Just off of a trail.

HEre are a few images of P. baeocystis. The bluing in them is intense and there is no purple color anywhere. The fresh caps are an olive brown color turning golden strawcolored in drying with gold and blue tinges s and sometimes blue-green tinges. Here are a few of the bluing and dried specimens. THe stems are usually pure white or straw-yellow to pale white when fresh bluing intensely upon handliong.

mj

Observe the edges of the bottom of the cap. The cap has pleats in them inmost specimens.

Here is another image showing the pleats.

As the cap expans the edge drops to an 1/8 to 1/4 inch down but the pleats still remain. Here are soem where the white stem has been handled and is turning blue and the caps share several color changes as they dry

and

fresh and in woodchips.

Drying with color changes

And now some fresh lawn specimens

And a few picked with extereme bluing in them.

And there are several dozen more images at my site under psilocybe baeocystis.

And disregard old field guides which state P. strictipes is similar to P. Babeocystis. The two leading mycologists misidentiefied the two as similar and more than a dozen guides after copied that very same error. P. strictipes is similar to P. semilanceata not to P. baeocystis.

WEll to ease your anxiety your mushrooms are definitely not P. baeocysitis.

And P. baeros have no veil or remnants of a veil. Sory. They generally grow in rich pasturelands, One or two only. In man made lawns they breed abundantly and in alder woodchips or alder beauty bark much in garcdens around rose bushes intheir early stages, etc and other simailar plants.

They're not Baeos. Baeos have darker caps and thinner stems, the caps often have imperfections(wavy, disfigured looking, etc). I have no clue what you found, but I would place my bets on it not being active. You don't want purple brusing, you want blue-greenish blue. Wait and see what others say before tossing them out though. They look like the have a slight chance of being active, but that doesn't mean you should eat it.

These mushrooms have been drying for a day.. Originally the blueing was blue blue, it just kind of faded to purple once I washed them in water and let them dry.. I'm going to go find another one or two and get some pictures of some fresh specimens.

I'll post again in a while. Thanks!

And one more. THe day I found this large one I had no camera so I took it to a photography shop in downtown Seattle. They charged me 15 dollars. A year later they pphotographed a new species and the photos were ruined by accident by the foto studio who took three pictures. What a shame.

and here are some that had longer stems growing in wild strawberry plants int he Freeway Park in Downtown Seattle.

Correct. And Baeos do not grow oon stumps either.

Just look at the pictures. There are certain characteristics common in this species which are easily recognizable.

Okay, well seeing as how they're probably not bacilyous, could they possibly be anything else, say stuntzii or whatever?

After checking things out, I'm sure they are Corts. Some are deadly, others toxic... some are edible. Not a genus I'd experiment with.

Check out this link:
http://www.moneyhackers.com/mu/shroom_ident.html
Scroll down to the section about Cortinarius that stain blue.

Don't eat those mushrooms.

I think what MJ is saying is that yours are not active, I'm no expert but I do know a little about hunting, from those pictures of your shrooms I'm quite certain they are not active.

I'd take a spore print, but the bruising looks all wrong, and these just don't like active from what I've seen in my experience..

I'm sure someone can shed the light on what they are, but please don't consume these

Your photos certainly look like Cortinarius. If so, they should give a rusty brown spore print, which I think I see in the next to last photo, where the remnants of the partial veil on the stem have caught spores.

The closest species match I see is Cortinarius anomalus, but I don't have much confidence in identifying corts. My book lists this species as inedible, but I'll also repeat Dr. Moser's response when asked about the edibility of corts - "I won't eat any of them." (Dr. Moser knows more about Cortinarius than anybody else.)

Good ID, GumbyDude. Scrolling down and seeing the photographs I immediately thought cort and it's good to see the posts end up saying that instead of Psilocybe.

Very nice photographs. Combined with your description, they were very helpful.

Happy mushrooming!

Why are people opening these four-year-old posts one may ask?

Wellt he reason that many of these old posts are being opened is because of the related threads section at the end of a page.

It lists old posts of related interest and then someone opens them and responds to them. This is causing newbies a lot of confusion and then mods step in and complain about people opening old posts.

I was this post here and responded and then relaized why it was brought up for viewing. IT is because of the listing of related data after making a post.

for example, this is at the bottom of the threads first page.
