WHITE TRUFFLES

SOOO...white truffles apparently cost absurd money and cant be grown indoors, eh? What are the obstacles/what is the obstacle myco farmers face when trying to grow them? I would really like to work with this community and maybe hive-mind a way of growing this delicacy!

Hmm if you plan growing any kind of truffle you should start with BIG area of growing, otherwize it is not profitable. You will spend MUCH more money than the yield!

As far as i know they are grown in specific soil and some kind of trees have to be planted there(they grow by the roots), wikipedia can tell more :wink:

Truffles grow underground and are typically located in calcareous soil. Most truffle farms that make it have complete orchards of Oak or Filberts. These are mainly Tuber melanosporum (black). There are some folks in Oregon growing Tuber gibbosum (white) using Douglas Fir.

So to start you would want to plant an orchard of supporting tree saplings and inncoluate the roots with the Tuber your planning on growing.

Yup I second that. You can purchase pre-inoculated saplings and plant them wherever you'd like to.

The hard part is planting them in the correct soil and environment to get them growing. Another thing to remember is that it takes years and years to even begin seeing viable results.

Whatever the supplier tells you that your soil should be, PH and nutrient content then you have to make sure it stays that way. Some places on Earth self-sustain the perfect truffle environment. Croatia, France and Italy to name the major three. Croatia has the world record white truffle.
