I have heard this from a couple of people, but i don't see the point. After all, you can safely do a taste test on any mushroom out there no?

No, I'm not kidding, and i tell you why. I have been following a lot of other well know Mycologists work over the last few years, and have heard that from many other Mycologists, but as i sit here telling you that my wife handed me one of the latest works i have been studying from Roger Phillips, Geoffrey Kibby and Nicky Fox..
May i quote them from there entry on field identifying..
"Check the smell and taste. (To ascertain taste, nibble a little bit and break it up on the tip of your tongue without swallowing it, spit out the remains and completely clear your mouth; if done carefully, even the most poisonous species can be tasted in this way, though in practice you will soon learn to recognize and so avoid tasting the main poisonous genera.) End quote.
Now, i'm not saying anyone should, i just feel i have it on good authority that if done properly, you could, and hence would never need to worry about absorption to the point of wearing gloves. All this is very off point however, and is rather trite given the nature of the humor in my original observation of my flaming post, don't you think?
Peace.

No, i hear ya! I for the longest time said, O-HELL no, but i have seen it done now, and yes done it.. So yeah, its all good in the hood ya know.
It almost feels like a monkey see, monkey do thing, but its not like that, its part of the process of learning the proper education of mycology. We must remember why we are so attracted to the mystical science in the first place, its all so unbelievable really...

How come no one bats an eye when cube pins are picked?

Picking pins is not a mortal sin.  To some extent, it can't be avoided with large clusters.  Also, the material can be used for propagation.

For a moment today I got super-excited...then sad.

I found a beautiful little patch in a great location, but it was ruined by that mushroom-melting black "cancer".  I believe it's a bacteria of some sort...I may be wrong though.  Even the young specimens had signs of infection.  There were some pins coming up, so I might try to go back again...but I'm not holding my breath.

its fine as long as u dont swallow it.
but its risky, its easy for a gill or something to get lost in your mouth.

keep the mushroom at the front of your mouth, dont let it move around much, dont chew it much if at all, and rinse your mouth out with water afterwards, try not to swallow any juices from it.

Those are cyanescens, although  I don't recommend eating pins, as they are more difficult to identify, and look very similar to deadly lookalike pins.

I taste all sorts of random mushrooms, its a good way to get an idea what kind of chemicals are in it.  I also taste ones that are known to be deadly.  But not too much because they don't really taste like much of anything and I am sure that causes a small amount of amatoxins to absorb the blood.  But that is ok.  Chanterelles, Boletes and Agaricus have small amounts of amatoxins.  I also taste all sorts of random plants.  I expect that I will run into problems doing that with plants before I have problems from doing it to mushrooms.  Some plants cause severe blisters if you just taste it real quick.

Amatoxin made some death cap spaghetti sauce, to see how it tasted.  She said it was good.

I also have a theory, which is - basically, cyans and other shrooms are more potent in colder weather growth, because they produce more tryptamine, to protect the fruit body.

That seems like a reasonable theory.
Hopefully its true, because last night was the coldest its been in over a year in puyallup and it rained here today so hopefuilly I can get a decent haul and some great pics tommorow.
