Soap on straw? Anything else?
    #9003627 -

I've seen many people recommending soaking straw in dish soap prior to pasteurization.  Although I've yet to hear an explanation as to why.

Does it kill bacteria?
Does it kill mold spores?
Does it favorably alter the PH?
Does it act as a wetting agent?
Does it has some other effect that I did not mention?
All of the above?

If any of these are true then why is soap only added to straw?  Would it not also be effective to add dish soap when soaking coir?  Or Mix in bits of dish soap with the water you are to hydrate your bulk poo/castings, soil and or verm casing?

I've also seen natural dish soap that has tea tree and lavender oils, would this also has a positive effect on preventing molds and bacterias to flourish in a bulk sub?

The more I can learn about the science of dish soap the better.

soaking the straw or washing it has help me with bacterial contamination.  use any antibacterial soap.  like to use hand soap it seems to wash out easier than the dish. just a couple drops with do for every gallon. you don't need to have suds, if you do than you use to much and it a pain to rinse out.

Moved to the cultivation forum.

Soap does help to kill bacteria and mold spores, but it's mostly useful as a wetting agent for straw due to its basic construction.  There may be applications for use with other substrates, but the nature of straw makes it very advantageous.

I was under the impression that it does not need to be washed out.

Would leaving it in be bad?

I move it from the soap bath to the hot water bath without rinsing.  It gets rinsed in the pasteurization anyway.  There's a short video clip of the process in the straw section on my site.

i was rinsing grains once before hydrating them and i added a very smal squirt of dish soap while cleaning the grains. not sure it did much or anything at all but it worked out good because my grains were very clean and didnt stick the slightest bit after PC'ing no gypsum added.  anyone think the soap did anything? without soap they came out the same way. for some reson i add a couple drops in the grain now when i clean it. cant be bad for it right? I just get OCD about clean grains. ill drain off the water and refill 10 times while swishing them around in the pot. hey never had any probelms though.anyone any thoughts about the soap?

Psilocybe Cubensis

Psilocybe comes from the Greek root "psilos" meaning bald head and Cubensis because it was first recognized as a new species from specimens collected in Cuba.

Have you ever check to see if the soap effects PH?

Perhaps soap would also be useful as a wetting agent on a casing layer.
