Cyans are not growing yet.

Not till november, after the big storms.

:ilold:

I found some today that were too old to pick!

Lots of pins too and about 20 or so big enough for picking.

Last year I was picking grocery bags full by Oct 19

it will be some time before you start finding cyans down there in the bay area.  I would give it a month, at least.

Last year they popped up after the first substantial rain of the season - mid to late october.  The last cyans I saw growing was march 9th.

So i have gone on several, several mile hikes throughout the area, and have came to the conclusion that:
The landscapers in this area suck.

They only use cedar chips. That's all i can find around here. The only area I've found that looks "alderish" has a good inch of cedar underneath it.

What the hell is wrong with these people?

Don't they realize all they have to do if they want all of the townsfolk to be docile and happy is to ONLY use alder?

I even went out into the woods for a couple hours. Nothing active. I need to broaden my search area.

:shitstorm:

I've been lurking for a looong long time but I figured I might as well chime in now. I made the trip to western washington today and went for ~1 hour walk through some parks, found a TON of shrooms and pins but I realized that I'm not experienced enough to begin picking confidently.

Came home tonight and realized I stumbled on a moderatly sized bed of what appear to be cyans in some leaves and muck. Still too put off to pick them though :p , I need to find a hunting buddy to show me the ropes.

I've spent hours and hours bumming around the foothills of the cascades in eastern washington finding very little, I was suprised when I stumbled on so many beds in the space of 1 hour on the west side. I'll have to study up more and head back over!

i hear ya, though when i was working landscaping, we chose chips based on the needs of the beds we were planting.

the ones with trees and big bushes got less protection, and we ended up adding hardwood chips, whereas the more delicate plants that needed better coverage from the weather received softer woods like cedar.
softwoods are better at holding moisture and temperature.

ultimately its up to the people who we are working for aka the property owners.

the apartment building i live in is getting some landscaping done and i told my manager that i'm allergic to cedar, "so if they could please use some other type of woodchips, like alder, that would be great" :tongue2:

Went out yesterday, found some new patches with just a few big guys, but tons of babies.  Checked a few other patches and they were lookin nice.  I think it is because they get no sunlight, stay cold in the shade, and i water the hell out of them.  I got about 1 oz dry, ill put up some pics when i get home.

Im in the same boat with all my patches. Ive only stumbled across a small one so far, but my other ones do have quite a bit of mycellium growth. I want to call rich marriot and tell him to change the weather.

In my experience they move around...

Where I found lots last year, I may not find any this year.
I think patches have a life cycle.  Some last a few years, some only one season.
Some only one huge flush, some continuous flushes.

Just keep looking...today I found a small patch and over 80% were too rotten to pick
