Yea portland really sucks for alder, anyone know of small towns around portland that tend to use alder? Everything around p town is just cedar bark chips.

Found some subbs right outside my door! Unfortunately they were surrounded by foes so it might not be worth it.

Though I'm going to check day by day anyway to see if it becomes anything substantial (har har har).

Is it true that cyans grow in riparian zones, such as rivers, when the water floods and then recedes, creating debris from alder trees?

Yay! Um, *cough* excuse the excitement. My first post on this board! I've been surfing the board here for about 2 years now, and I finally had the audacity to join, even though I'm what you might call a "Mycology Neanderthal". I have read a lot on this particular thread, and, since it's my day off tomorrow, I know a REALLY good park with all the right habitats (I can guarantee you that some of you from the eastside of Lake Washington have been there...) I'm starting off my hunting with cyanescens, since I have researched them the most. I hope it will be good pickins tomorrow, love the pics of picks folks, hopefully I can come w/ some tomorrow. Wish me luck....

Makes sense that Newport is showing signs. It's on the ocean and has the colder wetter weather going for it. Congrats on the find globejs. I'm gonna stick around town for my searches, I don't think I could handle the disappointment of making a special road trip to the coast to find cyans and end up empty handed. If I've got another reason to go out there however...

Anyway, I found some LSD finally, so that should tide my curious nature over for another day or two. Cyan craze has me in her tight and cruel grip. I think I might achieve nirvana when I spot my first cyan.  :psychsplit:

it will be some time before you start finding cyans down there in the bay area.  I would give it a month, at least.

Well I went to a park in Tacoma. I found a few different species but no cyans. What was interesting was in this one area with grayish bark around these bushes there were a bunch of holes where it looks like stuff was pulled up. I wonder if some people got there before me or if the people who work at the park just pull up the mushrooms when they sprout. Meh it might not have been mushrooms though. Who knows.

I see that exact kind of thing, and it worries me.  The park I find 2-3 dry oz of cyans at every year is on my way to school, so I walk through it almost every morning and sometimes I see those holes even though the mushrooms are definitely not growing yet.  Maybe people are taking the myc?  Or animals are responsible for it?  I don't know.  Weird that you see it too though.

My guess about the "holes" you guys are seeing is that birds are searching for worms in the soil underneath the woodchips. It's pretty unlikely that park workers would be spending time pulling up mushrooms, considering they are being paid hourly, you know?

I realize these are distributed "from SF to Vancouver" and are in mostly manmade areas... but I am wondering about very small coastal towns.  If they have the alder chips, has travel up and down spread them enough that its worth looking?  Do they pop up everywhere that alder is put down in their range, or moreso within _x_ miles of an intentional patch?  Would you stop in weirdo little towns like Newport and Lincoln City, OR and so on?

Leave it to a n00b to fuck up the title to a thread.

Mantid, don't do that.  You had me thinking I missed an ID thread by changing the title.
