Psilocybe strictipes?
    #9036121 -

Found these on a pasture road at a boundary of a country property where tire tracks of a farm tractor frequent.  Found growing in grass.  Could there have been poop?  Possibly, because that property has two horses and they ride on that road.  But I found no evidence of poop.

I had asked help to ID on another forum, so I hope the gentleman who helped me doesnt get angry that I asked for a second opinion.

Sorry I didnt get environment photos, was in a hurry because I thought I found something good and forgot about taking pictures.

Another thing, these were found in Eastern coastal Quebec, which seems to be out of its normal environment.  But there are some immigrants from England here.  lol

The features seem to match the Wikipedia article.  What did they smell like?

There was a faint hint of plain 'ol mushroomy scent, nothing unpleasant.

I'm still trying to wrap my head around the description of "purple brown" spore print.  I don't have any other references, nor can I find pictures.

Neither could I, Ceara.  I puzzled and puzzled over your print trying to tell if it were purple-brown.  I suppose you could say it was.  The scent confuses me more though.  They are supposed to smell "Farinaceous," which is another way of saying "like a cubensis cake."

I guess I would call them that, but not eat them, until someone else ventures a guess.

They are definitely LOOK like P. strictipes.  Although you didn't post a proper ID request.  Nonetheless, they are.  Cool find.  I don't know if I've ever seen a post of that species here, before.

I don't really know how to describe "Farinaceous."  What, like flour?  And I've never smelled a cubensis cake, so I am useless there.

Everyone's smelling capability is different.  Only mushrooms that I found smelled like the descriptions were Lactarius thyinos and one of the Inocybes.  The Inocybe smelled heavily like green corn, i.e. nasty.

Some mushrooms make my nose sting a bit when smelling and I stay far, far away from those.  Otherwise, they either smell bad, "mushroomy," or I don't detect a scent at all.

I found another one that's probably not seen very often, the Blue Clustered Chanterelle.

Note:  Out of all the mushrooms I've found in the wild, I have not eaten any.  I prefer to keep my organs.  lol  But finding, photographing them is so fascinating.  Am amazed at how many types exist out there.

can strictipes really vary this much?:

i was sure these are strictipes, but look so totally different than those above. bruise blue. purple print, found in pasture.

Cubensis cake smells like dried cubensis only stronger.  I assume you have smelled cubensis mushrooms.  In other words, kinda like a box of cornmeal.  I'm a sniffer, not a taster.  I smell many mushrooms that I pick just because I like to sniff things.  This year, after finding Pluteus cyanopus, I really began to sniff in earnest, trying to detect the subtle differences between mushrooms.  As a result I can detect odors now I couldn't earlier in the season.

I rarely eat any mushrooms I find either.  I am more into the science/taxonomy/photography than mycophagy.  I guessing sniffing mushrooms isn't for everyone so I won't recommend it.  However, it is one of the ways we can tell which species a mushroom is.

No, never seen a cube, let alone smell one.

That kind of stuff doesn't grow around here wild, and I don't cultivate.

Although I plan on inoc some wood logs with edibles next spring.

However, thanks for the description of farinaceous.

I agree, macroscopically they resemble Psilocybe strictipes, nice find! They look exactly like the specimens I found here in New Zealand at sea level on the west coast in 2005, I was unable to photograph them but I collected some prints!
I'm sure someone out there would be interested in doing some microscopy, these could still turn out to be something different!
It would be nice to see some images of these in their natural habitat:grin:

I would have to disagree with you Mr. hongos, i have found several mushrooms which smell identical to weilii but are not.

I use my nose when i hunt weilii or oysters, i always smell oysters 50-100 yards before i see them.

WIth weilii you have to know the smell, the reason for this is when your hunting weilii under pine straw you cant always see them but will be able to smell them easily.

Gaspesie, yes.

I hunt for ALL shrooms and photograph just about every one as best I can.  Majority of what I've found are poisonous types or non-edible types.  Even found some funky types like corals and slimes.

The best ones I found so far are the Blue Clustered Chanterelle, Lactarius thyinos, and a possible Chanterelle.  Oh and some pretty Amanita guessowii.  I say possible Chanterelle because I found the patch when it was past its prime and so couldn't positively ID it.

Eventually I'd like to catalog everything I find in a localized field guide because I find the other field guides out there pretty much ignore this area because it's not highly populated.  I found stuff that was not even mentioned in the Audubon Field Guide for N America or the NE N America by the Bessettes.  Neither of those books even had a photo of the Lactarius thyinos.

Perhaps people in Price Edward Island or even Newfoundland could help catalog.

I can see striations around the cap margin, a purple brown print and hygrophanous cap.

All of these things point to a psilocybe, im not familiar with this species since i live in the south and they dont grow here.

Also just because wiki says they smell a certain way does not mean they will, not all mushrooms are textbook.

I follow my nose too.  lol

When walking in the woods and the breeze drifts by a distinct mushroom smell, I immediately change course and go look for the source of the smell.

Unfortunately, no such luck finding Oyster, Turkey or Chicken mushrooms.  But I did find a lone Lobster that was massive and weighed a couple of pounds.

That's good information, weiliiiii.  But, no, you can't disagree with me if I agree with you.  :tongue2:

When I said "one of the ways" I meant in conjuction with other characteristics.  It is one feature, not the whole thing.  In that way, it's like tasting a mushroom.  If a mushroom is suspected of being a Gym and it isn't bitter, it isn't a Gym.  There may be exceptions to that but I can't think of any.

I've never been able to smell a mushroom for more than 20 feet.  Most of the time it is the mycelium I am smelling.  I read the Garlic Mycena and Anise Clitocybe can be smelt before seen in most cases.

Not all gyms taste bitter, the majority of them do but i have read every now and then some of them dont taste bitter.

I think i read that on tom volks site, or maybe mushroom observer.
