Moving to tibet/india/nepal to become a buddhist monk
    #9037458 -

Should I go for it?  I'm tired of the materialistic way of life.  All I care about now is spirituality and what better place to go then one of those places to become a monk.  What do y'all think?

Well, I love Tibet, India, and Nepal (although I haven't visited these places yet) and I'm sure you could learn lots of great things...

However, this would appear to be "running away", even if it is from the materialistic life. You can learn everything that you could possibly learn there wherever you are currently reside.

A lot of yogis have said that being "liberated" whilst living in a cave or in the jungle or whatever isn't so difficult, but it's when you come back to "society" that the difficulty sets in.

My suggestion would to work on your sadhana (spiritual practice) wherever you are. Location is no excuse. Be in the world, but not OF the world.

Yea I guess there's probably monasteries here in california anyways but I've always been interested in traveling east.

I definitely want to travel East too. I think it would be amazing to stay over there for as long as possible. I know a few sadhus who have been over to India for around 6 months to a year.

I'm positive there are monasteries in Cali. I remember reading about a specific one that Bhagavan Das and Ram Dass were giving classes and stuff in.

Go have an adventure, you'll be just as much in the world here as anywhere else. I would suggest looking into a few meditation retreats first, and then maybe a year long stay in a "local" monastery which you will be required to fund yourself. Spend some time and learn the language and culture, and you will find any monastic order much more receptive.

:yesnod:
exactly. materialistic life is everywhere you want it to be.
Bhagavan Das commented about how coming back to the States after having been in India for 5 or 7 years was a major part of his sadhana.

To the original poster, are you strictly looking into Buddhist monasteries? If so, what sect of Buddhism?
I've fallen in love with the Hare Krishna temples. They'll teach you lots of stuff; and from my experience they are extremely nice and compassionate.

....and their food fucking rocks.

I'm not a fan of anything else they do, but I sure do love eating their food for lunch on campus.

Ya know, i haven't yet eaten any of their prasadam (consecrated food to God). I've always heard that it's amazing though.

I love the chanting and the music and puja services

Well if you're young then i'd say go on some more adventures and activities/see the world first but if you're old that sounds like a pretty chill place to be.

Dono the buddhists don't do entheogens do they? That would be a tad sucky IMO. You do realize how strict having a buddhist monks lifestyle is right? IMO we all need to let our hair down once in a while. I'd go for shamanism over buddhism sounds much more fun to me. Plus the amazon is a way better kinda place you really can imagine spirits being in it. Although Nepal would be much more epic and epicness is always . Might be a little harder to go and practice with a tribe though haha.

hey... you don't have to be a monk forever.  even 4 years in silence and meditation would have a dramatic effect on your being.

after that 4 years, it would be an entheogenic partay.

I don't think this is the way it works.
The point of meditation is to get "There". Once you're "There" there is no turning back.
With that being said, I don't think that entheogens are a hindrance to getting "There", and can even be helpful if used correctly. It's the attachment to the entheogens as the method of getting "There" that has to be given up; not necessarily the entheogen itself. Attachment to any vehicle that takes you "There" is a block to remaining "There".

So no more entheogenic partying in the "there" afterward? Bollocks to that. Sod sitting on a park bench meditating all day for the rest of your life. That would get dull even if you were at peace.

have you been to a vipassana retreat?  if you have, then you would understand that the setting you are surrounded by and the intent and practice of the group you are meditating with has a dramatic effect on the rate at which you unfold.  i don't think you are understanding my POV.  the point of living in such an environment is for the silence and like minds.  the quiet atmosphere, the motivation you would get from your peers, the effect of the group meditation, would all be very productive.

yes this setting isn't required to develop self-awareness, but it would speed progress imho.  and yes such a setting could probably be found in western society, but this isn't my point.

unless you are surrounded by noisy distractions, then they pose as a hindrance.

you must have misunderstood me, because i never implied that entheogens are a hindrance to getting "there".  and i understand the concept of attachment, but thanks for the reminder

Hey RA69, been wondering where you been. Your last post for a really long time said you were dying of mercury poisoning so I was pretty worried.

I also often consider going off and joining a monastery. The one thing that holds me back is my attachments to people in my life as it already is; seems like I would be leaving a lot that I love behind. My friends and loved ones are more important to me than anything else.
