You should check out the grow/find section of this site. There's a lot of info. Here's one tek for doing it: http://www.shroomery.org/findorgrowthem/liquidmycelium.html

Just honey??? No malt extract? no agar?
Can you detail the events? You may've invented a new tek!

Simply i dissolved a teaspoon of honey (light yellow, not brown) into 250 cc of spring water...not distilled or tap....
I bought the honey at health food store...
after mix, close the jar with a lid...sterilize in pressure cooker...let it cool then inject 2-3 cc of sporeswater....
Put in a dark warm place and wait.....
In few days u will see small white hairs....this is the mycelium. Shake the jar twice a day and wait 7-10 days.....
Now the solution it's ready.....
Use it to inject pf style jars or try the whole grain tek ( i use boiled brown rice).
My pf jars are half colonized after one week from injection!!!!
Keep the jar in the fridge and u can use it for months......

Peace to all the shroomybrothers!!

I think this is an excellent idea. I have never seen honey get moldy, yet it contains lots of simple sugars and nutrients that the mycellium needs to grow. I'm gonna try this one soon, and see if I get the same results.

This does sound like an excellent idea. Since honey is like a natural preservative, it might prevent contaminations. This could really be a breakthrough.

Club99,
I tried the honey on some Pan cyan. mycelium.
After about 48 hrs. it started to bubble a little. Is this normal? I brew my own beer and I believe it's fermenting.
I'm scared to smell it, because it might be fermenting, and mead is not what I'm trying to make this time.

Anyway seems that your solution were contaminated by bacteria.....
Did u sterilyze well the solution?
I use this tek with PF strain but i never saw bubbling......maybe dont't work with pancyan (i don't think this).
But if u brew by yourself use the malt extract tek....
The reason for wich i use honey is that here in europe home brew isn't common...so i cant find malt.....i'm looking for a tek with very common ingredients.....

Let me know....

-Peace-

Also...be sure to don't put too much honey...
You need a very little quantity....not a full teaspoon....just let the honey cover the spoon.......

Club99,
I sterlized the solution. I smelled the jar and it smells like honey and shrooms. I don't believe it's contaminated.
I also think that if spores will grow on it so will mycelium. It was just a experiment with some left over mycelium. I am a frim believer in experirmenting, it's a excellent way to learn.
I am a all grain brewer. I don't use malt extract. If you need some malt extract I can tell you were to get it delivered from the USA.

Honey?!?!? WOW I would have never thought of that! Well, I know that mushroommagic.com sells what they call LCIP (Liquid Culture Inoculum Powder) basically you add 2 cups distilled water (mineral or any water purified will do) and add 5 and a 1/2teaspoons of the LCIP to a 1 pint regular mouth jar (they say regular mouth because they send you regular mouth filter disks) sterilize your typical method via pressure cooker or boiling water in a pot wait till its cooled to inoculate. Its sapose to start growth of mycelium in 3-7 days then wait till the jar has been colonized 50% and then inculate your substrate directly. I have not tried this yet, But am intrested in trying. If anyone else does this or has used the LCIP please post results....I will do the same

I've used LCIP from Mushroom Magic. Not bad. Though, i have my suspicions that the contents of the their LCIP is just malt. Nice light yellow colored powder. Maybe theres something else in it, but i don't know. Now, when you're done mixing it, you have a kinda brown liquid. It kinda lightens up after autoclaving uinless you "burn" it. Then it gets darker, as you've carmalized some sugars in the malt. You avaoid burning it by not putting your burner on high when getting up to temp/pressure. As mycelium runs through the liquid, it gets lighter a little. I've had really bad luck innoculating broth from spore syringes. I'd suggest a wedge of agar instead. Maybe its just me and my bad luck, but nothing ever contaminates until i innoculate, then everything goes to hell. But I'm pretty sure a pure culture from agar is a much better way to go about things, as broth is far less forgiving than rice and birdseed. Either that or I've just had some nasty luck with the syringes i get delivered...though I'm pretty damn sure some brownish gunk is living in the Pan Cyan syringe i just got in the mail... ugh.

club99 or anyone else,
How long do I need to sterilize the teaspoon of honey and half pint of spring water. Unless I missed it, noone has mentioned it. By the way, that was a great idea, I have tried a few liquid mycelium teks only to meet with failure. If you answer this tonight you bet tommorow I will rise nice and early to try it.

You dont need very long times...20-30 min. it's enough in a pressure cooker...
I put the cooker on the fire then i wait until starts boiling...then i count the time......

Club99 - Sometimes it seems that the best ideas are the most simple ones, and it takes someone with creativity and imagination to show you what should have been obvious. Wonderful idea! Anyway, I was wondering if it would be possible to drop a small piece of a fine fresh specimen into the honey water and have it grow out into mycelium? I have heard that this works on agar and is the best way to clone a particular specimen. Just a thought, maybe a good way to grow out a single strain of mycelium water.
