mycelium observations.. anyone???
    #1088745 - 11/26/02 10:09 PM (14 years, 9 months ago)

I've got 3 strains in millet right now,, EQ, Tapalpa, and Wollongong.

The eq's injected on nov 12( from 2 different syringes 6 jars ) have not started yet?????

The tapalpas injected on nov 14th, show growth in round patches very solid white growing in a round pattern.. but thick

the wollongong injected on nov 20, show growth along the entire side of the jar but more translucent and not as thick, much more advanced than the taps..

has anyone noticed diferences in growth from different Cubes???

My jars are in an incubator with temps at 30c, they are all made with wild bird seed, pc'ed for 1hr 15mins. The wolls were given a wick in the lid,, used a piece of makup removing tabs, cotton like stuff, i rolled up in a strand and poked thru hole in lid. then made a 2nd hold for injection... all are covered with tinfoil with the rings loose... so voila paramaters!!\

so.

Most deffinatly. There can be vastly different growing cycles and parameters for different strains. Sounds fun though...

Yes. There are differencies even in the same strain.

Any relation to how it will later pin and fruit?

Does thick or translucent mycelium indicate too hot or too cold, etc... conditions?

Too much moisture in the grain or too little????

What does one look for ? what is the optimum growth apearence?

Anno might have something to say on this ?

From my experience the jars should be fully colonized in 2 weeks. If they didn't then there was something fatally wrong - contamination.
- Too much moisture in the grain usually results in bacterial contamination. The grain shouldn't look wet. If you notice greasy wet marks on the glass when you shake the jars then you have contamn.
- Not enough moisture is not so fatal, it just takes longer to colnize.
- Your temp may be too high - I usually incubate at around 25C.
- Once the mycelium starts growing it spreads inside the jar with more or less constant speed. If it stops then it probably met some contaminants.

If you don't know how it should look then do a search on the shroomery. You'll find lots of pics of healty jars.

Agree with above post AND to repeat myself and others....
different strains grow different ways....If you have filter discs on w/metal lids still try taking the metal lid off and having just the filter disc on. Sometimes jars can stall if not provided with enough O2...

Ahh, i see.

Update:: Well, the taps and coming along ok, but the Wolls, holy shit.. they are takin over!

I don't have filter disks but the wick thing makes a huge difference with the wolls.

6T was totaly right,, i will do this from now on!

1 of my EQ's have started a small white patch, so i think they will go eventually, but VERY SLOW!!!

No signs of contams what so ever yet??? i've checked and re-checked the EQ's and they seem ok, the grain is nice and loose, no slime, no smell, no funky colours etc... so i'm not sure, i'm almost thinking syringe too old maybe...

oh, also, i know what the jars should look like, i've done BRF before, and i'm sure the growth is mycelium, i was just observing the different ways wich the mycelium grows from different varieties!!! wolls, taps, eq's...

ok, more observations.

the EQ's that were not taking, are now starting to take,,,

funny thing is that the mycelium looks like a white spore print on the side of the glass???? it grows in very symetric paterns in a circular shape!

the wolls just spread a clear white strandy stream that later turns bright white and the taps grow in small tiny patches that combine after a while, i'm all set with a wol and a tap jar, i got a bale of hay last night, nice gold stuff,, we are gonna boil some watter tonight !! woo hoo!!
