Re: PNW Cyan season right around the corner! [Re: 69I8U]

I found the right ones I believe. I am coming back from Seattle right now. I think some of them are already bluing. But I want to make sure. They were growing on alder wood chips in a little neighborhood near a park. The chip i recovered from the patch i could not for the life of me break it. Sturdy as hell. They were in dense clusters growing atop each other, and there was purple spores dropped a bit, the gills are light cinnamon brown, stems white (but parts are turning purple), stems themselves seem to be kind of on the thin side, maybe 1/2cm for the biggest specimens i recovered? Maybe a little bigger than that. The stems are long, like prolly 3-4" at least, and they grow curvy. caps look like they're no more than 2.5 inches across, most are more like 1" or 1 1/2". The caps themselves seem to have become like a deerhide brown color, I'm not sure how old they are but there were some healthy full growns it seemed like. They are very wavy and feel like a damp glasses cloth, they seemed mostly dry, since it hasnt rained much today...this is why I'm guessing they were like this? If cyans miss a day of rain will they get "weaker"? I left the babies. Ill get pics up soon. I still need to take a spore print, what's the best way to go about doing that??

Pics:

Chips...this felt like i was trying to break a piece of bone. IMPOSSIBLE.

cluster. notice the "purpling" on stems near where i made the cut, lower middle.

A few loose guys after i put 'em in the bag.

I mean, they're purpling when i touch them. It's not more of a blue as it is a purple, i dont know if its cause they've had a dry day today?

Just cut the stem from the cap and place it on a piece of paper and leave it for a few hours.

The Bad News: From the pictures they do not appear to be Cyans.
The Good News: I'm not an expert. Wait for the print and an ID from an expert.
PS: Post a seperate thread for an ID in the future. If they turn out then you can post them in this one.

They're bluing like crazy...are you sure these aren't the right kind?

Found on alder woodchips in seattle, near a public park. If anyone knows of this spot, they were growing gregariously, and the tree right next to it had some sort of japanese/chinese insignia spray painted on it.

Wow, well I don't know where the hell people like Psilo and others who live in WA are finding these flushes, because I just checked one of what I would consider the most prominent patches in the entire Seattle area and could not find a SINGLE pin. And believe me, if there were even just a few pinners up in this area I would've spotted them. I hardly even saw any Russulas up. Soooo, this leads me to wonder if whether it isn't yet cold enough, or if it still isn't wet enough. Either way I say it'll be a solid week or longer before we really see any action in the Seattle area.

I feel ya 100%. I have been rockin the area down in and all around PDX and not a thing yet. Have seen very little of the tell tails as well. I was in your hood last week and nothing, the beach from Lincoln all the way up to Long Beach the week before that, nothing.
Parks, yards, more parks, about a total of 50+ miles walked in PDX in the last week (I've had the time), and not a one active..
I second that. At least one more week, or we need lower temps, more moist mornings, and harder rain..
I can wait, can you?

Peace!

Mid. to late October is my bet.  A bit earlier for the artificially watered locals.  See you when the rain dances on the floating leaves of color.

They are out there, but I still do not expect the majority of the finds untill mid-October.  Peace
