Largest living thing...is a mushroom!
    #901759 - 09/23/02 02:41 PM (14 years, 2 months ago)

I learnt today, in my first biology class back at uni, that the largest organism in the world is NOT the blue whale, but in fact Armillaria Bulbosa, a mushroom (well all the stuff before a mushroom) 15 hectares big and weighing 10 tonnes. Now, I challenge you all to grow a cuby that size!!!

I remember reading about that a long time ago. What they mean is the underground mycellial network that takes up acres. I think it is Washinton state or around there.

the giant mushroom is the wise mother organism of the world, and all the mushrooms worldwide our joined in mental symbiosis, conected to the great god-shroom, whom has come from the psychadelic world beyond the stars, to initiate the chosen few to experience union with the alien mind. The grand mushroom is come, and all mushrooms everywear are dreaming there great slow dreams...

How do coral reefs compare to this thing? Aren't they considered living organisms also?

My understanding of coral reefs is that there are a ton of little organisms that build the reef over time. The reef is then just like a city or something. There are many organisms in there.

What I wonder about is plants that reproduce vegetatively. The offspring are not really offspring but clones. An example is bananas, sugarcane, and lots of cacti. Since there is no sex and new plants are genetically identical are they considered the same organism?

it is a mycelium network, found in a small town in Michigan. I remember this because of a small ryder truck that had the 'giant fungus' on the side, I wanted to jack the truck right there
