How do mushrooms work?
    #411608 - 10/02/01 06:50 PM (21 years, 11 months ago)

What I'm interested in knowing is how do mushrooms actually make you trip? What kind of chemical reaction does it cause? Any simplified answers woud be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Science doesn't really know.

"Magic" mushrooms contain the chemicals Psilocybin and Psilocin. Both of these chemicals are structurally similar to the brain neurotransmitter Serotonin. The way it looks is that psilocybin/psilocin affect the functioning of the serotonin receptors in your brain, and that makes you trip.

mushrooms produce cyanide naturally. this seeps into your spinal fluid and makes your brain bleed. that is why most of your visuals are a purple/reddish color. and once you trip, you never come down.

Psylocibin (the active ingredient in shrooms) has a similar chemical composition to serotonin and works in these receptor sites. They also reduce the brain filter that screens out information around you and allows you the focus more. Then they cause more neurons than usual to fire off and off you go tripping.....

That's about as simple as I can make it......

If I remember correctly, "these receptor sites" are the 5-HT receptors... at least for LSD-25 and MDMA. Do a search on dejanews.com in alt.drugs.* and rec.drugs.* and you will get some very detailed information.

WTF?

WTF is correct. You could almost grow shrooms in that statement.

Speaking of the way mushrooms work, make sure you aren't planning on joining the military ever if you're going to trip, because they do a spinal tap drug test before they let you in, and since acid and shrooms stay in your spine (towards the bottom because of gravity obviously) forever, you can never join the army if you trip.

Also make sure you eat of shrooms in multiples of two, so that your brain stays balanced. If you eat 3 or 5 then you end up with one extra shroom on one side of your brain (usually the right) and this makes you trip harder & longer on one side than the other.

Stay alert, stay safe.

No they don't. Please don't spread misinformation.

This is just stupid. Study some physics and fluid dynamics and then lets talk.

> Also make sure you eat of shrooms in multiples of two, so that your brain stays balanced.

Do you really believe all of this nonsence, or are you just playing with people here?

You need to be slapped with the sense of humour trout =)

I can maybe understand someone that has no common sense and is easily influenced believing the first paragraph, but the second?

Ah well, I guess no one ever lost money underestimating the lowest common denominator...

Your right though Suess, misinformation is a serious problem with drugs in general. Everybody and their grandma is an expert on drugs and what they do to your body and mind. Thats why there is so many myths around. The only good thing about misinformation is that it stops the mainstream losers who believe that crap from ruining what is, in the case of mushrooms, a magical part of nature.
