'pulverised' cow manure for bulk substrate?

hey shroomers,

I have just come across a bag of 'pulverized' cow manure. Tried to find out what pulverized meant or if it can still be used but couldnt find much. I gather its a heating process? Anyway i have some extra BRF cakes colonised and even though they are not the best to use for bulk spawn, id like to try. I was going to make up a 50% cow poo, 40% verm and 10% gypsum mix to spawn the cakes to, then case that when colonises(im not clear on this yet). The manure is nursery bought stuff. There wasnt much more info on the bag..

The part im not clear on is this. Should i fruit straight from the cpoo/verm/gypsum mix or do i need to case it? I gather that i can but what sort of differences would one expect/is it worth it?

Pulverized usually means 'ground to a pulp'. I'll bet this means the manure has an even dirt-like consistency. Would be fine to use for bulk sub.

You can either case or not case. Poke around the forum & see what people think, but casing is really providing a micro-climate for keeping everything moist. It's an extra step, but I think most people do it.

Yeah you can just fruit straight from your manure/verm/gypsum mix, that will be fine manure for some reason fruits really well without a casing, I case sometimes then dont others and in regards to cubensis I notice no real difference, when playing with other species it becomes necessary

I just put 4 trays in my FC & did the same thing - 2 cased, 2 uncased - (B+ strain) just to see how they would do compared to each other. Used manure/coir/verm/gypsum/coffee bulk sub.

Make sure you pasteurize your bulk, esp using manure. RR posted a great method that I use - basically use Qt jars - fill them with bulk, cover with foil & place in your PC/large pot. Fill 3/4 with cold water (will have to weigh down the jars). Bring to a good boil then immediately turn off the stove. Allow to cool in the pot & your jars will hit 160F for 1 hr. Getting a small thermometer & sticking it through the foil will help you get it right. Works perfect & no messy pillow cases. Look up RR pasteurization tek.

Also, while you are poking around the nursery, see if they sell bags of chicken manure (brand name: Cock-A-Doodle-Poo) & hydrate & mix into the bulk at no more than 5%. Had great luck with that!

Thanks yeah definately pasteurizing, thats a lot better than the method i was going to attempt. I wasnt sure how to do it really so im going to check that video out.

Im continuing this in my 'My Monotub Growlog' thread in growlogs section :wink: Built the tub today and i have some time off work so going to get that set up this week. Ran out of room in my FC for cakes and i still have plenty to go! This should be the way to go. :smile:

I have a question... did you pulverize it inside the cow or out of it? :evil: just kidding.. lol from what i hear cow manure is an awesome way to do bulk.. just make sure you pasteurize the shit out of it  :hook:

Don't forget to mix in some vermiculite.  Cow manure has a tendency to pack down tightly without the verm to help fluff it up.

I really would like to move to grains but i dont yet own a pressure cooker and they are more expensive than i first thought. Cakes should work fine though shouldnt they? Just a bit more easily contam'd?

also didnt use the pulverised cow manure, just went with another bag of regular stuff i found as you'll see in the other thread if youre interested..

To each their own. I found a PC a fairly cheap investment (~60USD) for moving to grains and being easily able to sterilize things. Plus, I didn't have any particularly big pots around - when you are dealing with Qt jars, nothing beats a large PC.

Really? Ive been looking online and the cheapest ive found a decent large PC is at least 200 or so, without shipping. Thats even on ebay. What size PC do you use? I was looking at 18qt models..

I paid 30 dollars for mine brand new came with 5 year guarantee it holds 6 pint jars not too big but for 30 dollars brand new who cares :wink:

Walmart is where I got mine. You don't need to go HUGE - mine holds 7 - 8 Qt jars, which is quite enough for my needs. IMHO, I wouldn't spend more than $80 on a first PC - mine is a Presto 16Qt model. Perfect for small scale application - just be sure to check the real cheap models, as they may not hit 15 PSI, which is the pressure you want.

No you don't need 15psi, 12psi is fine.
