Cow Manure
    #2127570 - 11/21/03 03:54 PM (13 years, 6 months ago)

hello everyone. I'm a newbie to shroom growing and I'm kind of dissapointed in my yield from cakes so I wanna do a bulk substrate with cow manure. I've heard cubensis is picked off cow dung, I've never really picked them myself. I was wondering If I layered cow manure then broken up pieces of BRF cakes would mushrooms be grow good or not. Thats basically doing the Straw & Dung TEK thats on the FAQ except minus the straw.

Do you guys think this would be a good idea?

SOunds good. Break up the cake real good. Put it in a clean ziplock and break it up in the bag, then mix it real well with pasturized poo. cover and put it in the closet for a week and check it. Then add a layer of casing material, wait another 5 days or so, then cold shock over night and put it in your fruiting chamber. Vwah-lah!

cow manure is too soupy to use without bulking it up with some straw.

Would natural cow manure found in a pasture work for this as well? with or without straw added?

Yes, and I might add it works great.

We have many cows and much land, would it work best to use the natural manure outdoors were it is, or bring it indoors?

You can bring it in. Remember to let is get bone dry before you use it.

Is there a dif between the dry and slightly damp? I figured the ones with more moisture would be better. Are there good tecks on the shroomery for casing with this method?

No, you want any cow piss in the cow shit to dry. Lay it out to dry.

There is already a few hundred out there that are bone dry.. Do I use the manure as I would any other casing substrate for the casing? What are the diffrences between manure and vermiculite? or soil?

those are all questions that can be answered in the FAQ but vermiculite just allows space to grow and airflow in soil. Poopy is a good source of nutrients for the mushrooms to thrive on. and dirt shouldnt really be anywhere near your casings.

So would it be a better idea to mix the manure with vermiculite?
