Shotgun FC v. humidity keeps fluctuating! w/ pics!
    #8936396 -

I currently have some cakes in a newly built Shotgun style FC.  I followed RRs tek and, using 1/4 bit, drilled roughly 150 holes in all 6 sides of my FC.  I am using standard run-of-the-mill perlite roughly 5" deep and I have the tub lifted ~5 in. from the surface beneath it.  Ambient humidity in my house is ~45% and ambient temp around 68F.  Im using an analog hygrometer that is fairly accurate (reads about 3% high).

For whatever reason my humidity will climb to +95% in the evening and at night, but early in the morning and during daylight my humidity drops to sometimes below 80%.  Is there anyway to nail this problem down and make it so my humidity stays more consistent?  What should I be looking for and what other information would help you solve this with me?

My cakes are fruiting, but slower than expected and Ive got a noticeable bit of bruising on the cakes and a tiny amount on the mushrooms themselves.  I believe that the few hours of exposure to low humidity is causing the bruising.  Is that a reasonable assumption?

Thank you in advance!

Are there temp swing where your tub is? How about air movement? Mine only fluctauates between 63%-95%+. My digi thingy only reads to 95%, I know it's higher than that. As for bruising, I would say it is more due to lake of water in your cakes. I would dampen some verm and place ontop of your cakes. Then pour a *little* amount of water on it everyday to make sure humidity for the cakes itself is maintaines and so that it can draw moisture from the verm.... If that makes sense. Humidity will produce little mushrooms, as will other things. IDK. My guess is not enough water in your cakes.

Fan them bitches like 5 times a day and also mist them with regular water.

... Avoid misting while fruits are forming.

Minor ambient temp swings, I would say at the most it may get up to 72F.  I originally had the same thought so I started to monitor temps closely and most days it doesn't climb more than 2-3F.

The cakes have been in the FC roughly 6 days, but bruising started around day 3.  I did dunk and roll them as per RR's videos, would they still be using up that much moisture or just lacking that much moisture in the first place?

I havent been misting much at all ... I've misted up into the air and let the fine water particles fall down into the FC because I read that direct misting may also cause bruising.

Thanks for the input so far!

Advice like this is what causes many grows to fail.  Misting is required from birthing to the day of harvest.  Mushrooms grow best in 99% humidity, and that means rain if they're outdoors, or misting if growing indoors.  Mushrooms pop up outdoors after a rain, so mist several times per day.

That's fine, but do it several times per day.  What kind of light is that?  The reason for a drop in humidity during the day is due to a temperature rise inside the terrarium.  If your temp goes up 20F degrees, your humidity will be cut in half.

I ask about the light because I suspect it's producing heat, which is raising the temp in your tub.  If it's a CFL, raise it up a bit to make sure the temps don't rise inside.  If it's an incandescent, get rid of it and replace with a fluorescent.

I've been misting about once per day.  I've been a little weary of misting more because when I was doing a test run with the terrarium I was misting about 5 times a day and I ended up with water pooling in the bottom.

The light is a daylight (6500k) 15w CFL.  It usually sits within 2 inches of the lid so I would say it is very close to the terrarium.  I will raise it up and see if that helps to drop the temps a little and subsequently help with humidity. I would very much suspect this as the culprit because my humidity drops do correlate to when my light is on (morning and daytime).

I will update with my findings, if for nothing else but to maybe assist future myconauts  :P
