Humidity Fluctuation, lighting Periods
    #1577818 - 05/26/03 06:14 AM (13 years, 6 months ago)

My friend is trying to fine tune his new set up. If he can not find a better inexpensive timer he is stuck with 30 minute intervals. 30 minutes mist on then 90 minute off running 24/7
The humidity fluctuates between 62% and 94% every 90 minutes. For casings, he heard a consistent 90% is recommended. Does he have a problem?.

He also set up a timer on the lights. He has heard as little as 4 hrs to 24.
What is the general view on recommended amount of light per day?

Mushrooms dont require a great deal of light and they dont need it for extended timer periods...you can leave it on for 24 hours but primarily you will just have a higher utility bill...4 hours is quite sufficient to assist in pinning and growth

Humidity for casings should be around 75-80% rh...cakes require higher humidity, the 90%+ range in a casing the additional moisture is provided by the casing material...the best way to handle casing humidity is to just cover the tray with plastic wrap and poke a few holes...too high of humidity can help bring on contams...

I Think the 62 % is too low to fruit.Put several pans of wet perlite in the bottom of the chamber to raise the Rh.If not, mist the hell out of it toward the end of the dry cycle.

If my friend wanted to get a timer that has more than 14 settings a day where would he go?
This unit has 14 settings a day. This breaks down to 1 3/4 hours x 14 =24.5, close enough to the 24 hour day cycle.
He has been misting 17 minutes per 2 hour periods, 12 times a day, that is the most he can get from his Intermatic #DT17C. Any more misting and th RH goes over 87%. The problem is that toward the end of the 1 3/4 hour period the RH drops to 52%.

He needs a digital timer with 24 settings per 24 hour period. Any one where you can get this?

P#1, in fact the correct casing rh is 85-92%. also, having near 100 is beneficial for pinning as the extra moisture brings pins faster, just make sure to drop it down after they reach a half inch or so. also, the foaf has had good pinsets using 12 or more hour lighting cycles until the half inch pin size, then anywhere from a hlaf hour to 12 hours is good-it is only needed to guide the shrooms which way to grow and do grow faster in darkness than light.
