Richard Wright dead at 65

Pink Floyd member Wright dies at 65

Richard Wright, a founder member of Pink Floyd, has died at the age of 65 after battling cancer, his spokesman said.

Wright played the keyboard with the legendary band and wrote music in classic albums such as Dark Side Of The Moon and Wish You Were Here.

His spokesman said: "The family of Richard Wright, founder member of Pink Floyd, announce with great sadness, that Richard died ... after a short struggle with cancer. The family have asked that their privacy is respected at this difficult time."

Wright's spokesman did not say from what form of cancer the star had been suffering.

The self-taught keyboardist and pianist met fellow band members Roger Waters and Nick Mason while at architecture school.

He was a founder member of The Pink Floyd Sound in 1965, and the group's previous incarnations, such as Sigma 6.

David Gilmour's response:

No one can replace Richard Wright. He was my musical partner and my friend.

In the welter of arguments about who or what was Pink Floyd, Rick's enormous input was frequently forgotten.

He was gentle, unassuming and private but his soulful voice and playing were vital, magical components of our most recognised Pink Floyd sound.

I have never played with anyone quite like him. The blend of his and my voices and our musical telepathy reached their first major flowering in 1971 on 'Echoes'. In my view all the greatest PF moments are the ones where he is in full flow. After all, without 'Us and Them' and 'The Great Gig In The Sky', both of which he wrote, what would 'The Dark Side Of The Moon' have been? Without his quiet touch the Album 'Wish You Were Here' would not quite have worked.

In our middle years, for many reasons he lost his way for a while, but in the early Nineties, with 'The Division Bell', his vitality, spark and humour returned to him and then the audience reaction to his appearances on my tour in 2006 was hugely uplifting and it's a mark of his modesty that those standing ovations came as a huge surprise to him, (though not to the rest of us).

Like Rick, I don't find it easy to express my feelings in words, but I loved him and will miss him enormously.

David Gilmour

Well hey, 65, and look at what he did.

A life well lived by any possible measure I could think of, and really it's about how you feel about your life. Not what others think of you.

Still, that being said, I'm sure he was proud of his accomplishments and rightfully so, it's sad he didn't push 90. But I think not everyone is as fixated on that idea as I am.

He was in Pink Floyd , not too fucking shabby if you ask me.:heart:

Well this is definitely going to alter my listening schedule. I'll be listening to tons of Pink Floyd, :snowman: for the next few days.

what was shabby was how he was hired as a tour musician on later tours instead of being brought in as an equal partner

to his credit, he never bitched publicly about it

he had a lot of class and creativity

And I am not frightened of dying. Any time will do; I don't mind.
Why should I be frightened of dying? There's no reason for it—you've gotta go sometime.

This is pretty sad. He was a huge part of what made Pink Floyd so special and unique. It's not entirely shocking to me though. He looked really frail and sick like when he toured with David Gilmour a couple of years back.

what the hell kind of comment was that?  for somebody with the DSOTM logo as their avatar, you should seriously be ashamed of that comment.  some fan you are.  David Gilmour made Pink Floyd what it became after Syd Barrett, and Gilmour's solos are unsurpassed for style and composition.  I feel like giving you 0 shrooms but it's just not even worth it.  to hell with you ... really.

anyways, how sad ... Richard Wright was the man

Yeah, that's a hell of a thing to say. David was just as responsible as Roger and Richard were to what made Pink Floyd what it was. Sure he made a mistake continuing on with Pink Floyd without Roger Waters but I don't think that that deserves him death.

... and at the same time, Roger Waters has been doing his own DSOTM tours recently without David Gilmour, so really, they're either all to blame or none to blame.  But yeah, wishing death on a member of Pink Floyd (even to replace another member who died) is just sad and pathetic.

Truly, the poster was entitled to his/her opinion, but he/she was almost the first person I put on ignore on the Shroomery.  Which says a lot, really.
