My David Gilmour gig review

So as some of you already know (exclusive58 ) a few days ago I went to Paris to see David's Gilmour gig for the presentation of his new album "On an island".
So I went knowing the probable setlist of the gig, but I must say I was still impressed by it. It went as follows:
Quote:
Set 1:
1. Castellorizon 2. On An Island 3. The Blue 4. Take a Breath 5. Red Sky at Night 6. This Heaven 7. Then I Close My Eyes 8. Smile 9. A Pocketful of Stones 10. Where We Start
Break
11. Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Pt.1-6) 12. Wot's Uh... The Deal 13. Wearing The Inside Out 14. Breathe 15. Time 16. Breathe Reprise 17. Dominoes 18. High Hopes 19. Echoes
Encores
20. Wish You Were Here 21. Comfortably Numb
So well, there I was with my friend waiting for it to start and the lights dimmed... We heared a loud noise coming from the speakers and sure enough there it was Rick Wrigth's synth for Castellorizon! Soon Gilmour steped onto the stage and started rocking our asses off with some whicked guitar licks.
Almost instantly in objective time, the entire band (5 members of the PULSE tour plus two new guys) was on stage and playing "on an island"; The sound was perfect and Gilmour's voice was as good as it ever was, accompanied with wonderful harmonies by Wright and Carin.
But the highpoint of the song was Gilmour's second solo, when he stopped worrying about the sound and public and started enjoying his own music; his pasion on the last notes was amazing; I can only say that I could feel every note coming up thru my spine into my brain.
Next, a few more songs with nothing really notable but the perfection of the playing and the beautiful sound they were getting. Up to this point everything was just as in the album and almost no lighting was used to increase the show's interest.
Oops, looks like the laptop is running out of batteries, will post the rest in a few minutes

So anyway, then it came the sax solo in red sky at night, which was surprised us to no end, because guess what... it's played by Gilmour! Pretty cool to see how he develops his meodies with other instrument, looks like his musicality covers every base. This last songs were pretty uninteresting tho, I almost fell asleep during a few.
Until they hit the first note of "Take a breath". THEN the show began. Dozens of lights were rotating vertically and horizontally to create complex patterns of color directed towards the public, while others created patrons of light on the floor so you couldn't barely see the payers, that much light was being used. The rythm on that song was whicked, and Gilmour was finally enjoying being in stage, smiling to the other guitarist and defying him to play even better. I'll tell you, this one got us all in awe and the quality of sound that overwhelmed the place the guitar was distorted but clear at the same time, the voices were powerfull but still understandable, the lights gotta us all high on color and the music itself couldn't rock more
Another boring song and a little recess to recover energies... There was a reason they thought we would need 'em!!

So, remember that first time you popped a cd on your uncle's cd player and without explanation there was some magical sounds coming from those old rotten speakers? Remember how magically those rhythms made you want to dance, how that voice made you feel connection, how those lyrics made you wish you were a rock star or fall in love?
Sadly, at least for us musicians, as you grow up there's a point in life where music starts losing it's touch of magic, when you begin to understand that it's played by someone who is actually a jerk with some instruments, with lots of theory knowledge and technical skills, with economical interests and contracts... It becomes a craft.
Likewise, there's a point where when you KNOW all of that, you start forgetting it and see between the ropes of sound and light and actually FEEL an human being with experiences, dreams and emotions trying to share a moment of their life, an idea or emotion with you thru their amplifiers, instruments, fingers and technical knowledge, but actually, that's just a medium. Now they're just opening their hearts for you feel, and in return you give them yours.
Some call it musicianship, some connection. Some call it magic, I call it beauty.
Well, that's what happened when I heard the songs of the second set
Starting right off with the wonderful Shine on, a more mellow rendition of the song dedicated to the lost star of Syd Barret, we were delighted by the sweet sounds of a guitar echo which lasted around 20 seconds to provide Mr.Gilmour a backing sound to develop heartfelt solos; He would play a chord and let it ring for long seconds, and then start expressing his grief for his long lost friend with some amazing licks.
He then proceeded to sing slowly the words we all know so well, until the band kicked in and gave us the taste of the song that's actually in the album, leaving the first mellow intentions in the past. A truly complete experience with some wonderfully selected lights in form of stars surrounding the experience
My friend and I were already in ecstasy after those 10-15 minutes of sound, but I couldn't be more ecstatic when the lights were turned on and an acoustic riff echoed trough th hall: One of my favorite songs had started, Wot's Uh... The Deal

Inviting and inciting me to rise
They say Inciting and inviting me to rise.....nothing major, but a minor foul up or maybe they did it on purpose.
I had to listen to it again to make sure that it wasn't my altered state last night fucking with me.
