How to pronounce ethno names and not look retarded.....

So here it is. I find that I am not very good at correctly pronouncing the scientific names (or otherwise) of plants (particularly ethno/entheos). Its kind of shameful, but I think most of us could admit to butchering a name over and over. So lets ask, and maybe we can get some answers and avoid feeling like dumbasses on the event that someone call us out.

So what names are you guessing at, how do you pronounce it, and why is it that I get confused with phonics lol?

Heres a few common ones.. I think they are right, correct me if they arent..

Psilocybe - sila-sibe
(T.) terschekii - ter-sheki,i
(T.) pachanoi - pak-an,oi
(T.) bridgesii - bridg-esi,i
Lophophora williamsii - lo-fofo,ra will,yam-see
Saguaro - su,wa-ro

Lol stupid latin....

I thought that the way to pronounce gyms was

gym-no-pile-us

But I think it may actually be

gym-nop-uh-liss


EDIT:  Just read the link.  I guess it's gym-no-pile-us lol

I think that's a good rule of thumb to just pronounce things how it feels comfortable to you.  But I think there are exceptions too.

For example, I always said caapi as cappy.  I was recently at a gathering where thedudenj pronounced it as cape-ee.  Cape-ee clearly makes more sense in this case.  If it was pronounced as cappy then it should have two  p's not two a's.

i have no problem with that...but my native language is a latin-based one, so that must have a lot to do with it.

if you find a link with a general pronunciation rule you can use that...the speaking what feels confortable thing is a good rule, but you must understand that every language has it's aesthetics..

I always pronounced caapi as kaa-pee though..

For caapi I pronounce - caa-pee.

It is easier to pronouce correctly when your first language comes from latin itself.

Most anglo-saxon languaged people don´t realize that in latin letters like 'i' have the sound of 'ee' like in speed. And other details like these.
