Ethanol from spent straw/sawdust
    #8920597 -

All this great talk here about fermented substrates has sparked my interest in the ethanol subject. I have family that runs an ethanol still and they are really interested in starting to do cellulosic ethanol. The main roadblock is the woodchips or whatever you are using must be broken down chemically to free up the sugars so they can ferment. I read an article about how they are using spent mushroom straw to ferment into ethanol. Evidently the mycelium frees up the sugars in the same way the chemical process does, unfortunately it eats some of the precious cellulose as well. Anyone have any thoughts on how sawdust/woodchips would work? Or any other thoughts on the subject?

That's an interesting idea.

As far as I know, the mushroom mycelium excretes enzymes, which break cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin into simple sugars, which are then consumed. This process comes to an end when most of the food is used up or when there is no more available nitrogen. Some types of mushrooms have a metabolism that produces substances that pile up kill it at some point, but I don't think that's the case for species growing on wood or straw. Anyway, I would expect some leftovers of cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin in spent substrates, as well as active enzymes.

Ideally, you would want to kill the mycelium at some point and let the enzymes continue their work. You may pasteurize your substrates and ferment them with brewers yeast, but then you would have to distill the result.

I'm afraid it would be a big effort for a tiny amount of ethanol. Might be more efficient to ferment anaerobically to produce methane.

Ive been doing a little bit reading on this subject aswell.

You could use fungi enzymes to free up the good stuff in whatever you want to ferment.

Im not sure how spent wood based substrate would perform, but im very interested.

I think Mycelio may be right that smaller scale methane may be the best way to go.

Abstract:

To evaluate the potential of using the enzymes from spent mushroom compost (SMC) as an industrial enzyme, the production of α-amylase, cellulase, β-glucosidase, laccase, and xylanase was determined from the SMC of four edible mushroom species (Pleurotus ostreatus, Lentinula edodes, Flammulina velutipes and Hericium erinaceum). Among the tested SMC, the SMC of L. edodes showed the highest enzyme activity in α-amylase (229 nkat/g), cellulase (759 nkat/g) and β-glucosidase (767 nkat/g) in 0.5% Triton X-100, and that of P. ostreatus showed the highest activity in laccase (1452 nkat/g) in phosphate-buffered 0.2% Triton X-100. The highest xylanase activity (119 nkat/g) was found in the SMC of F. velutipes.

Abstract of CN101085994
The invention relates to a method for preparing fuel ethanol by taking straw as raw material. It comprises following steps: (1) selecting crop straw as raw material; (2) disintegrating: disintegrating straw by using hammer mill, sifting and getting straw powder of 20- 40 order; (3) pre- treating: lignin degrading raw material by way of culturing white-rot fungi in solid culture medium and liquid enzyme; (4) saccharifying two enzymes, saccharifying straw by using cellulase and xylanase at 45 Deg. C, pH 4.5, 150 rmp and ratio between liquid and solid 15, getting reduced sugar; (5) fermenting; (6) distilling. The fuel ethanol productivity is 16.7% in this invention, that is 16.7 ton waterless ethanol with every 100 ton straw, the production efficiency is high and economic benefit and social benefit is pretty good. Compared with current process, this invention is characterized in that the fermentation is thorough and the fuel ethanol production cost is low.

Cheap and effective fuel for the car:grin:
Made from Mushroom Substrate!:tongue2:

Mushrooms really are going to save the world!
I can attest to the fact that old fermenting mycelium (grain/coir trays) can and will ferment and produce a next to pure Liquid Ammonia, In a very short period of time.
To get ethanol, would be cooler even

Check out, Clostridium acetobutylicum.

Butanol sounds just as viable as methanol, with some added benefits.

Heres a great post from another forum I thought was great and wanted to share:

Quote:
ethanol is far more versatile since there is such a great range of feedstocks one drawback however is energy inputsd but that can be corrected by using a vacuum in the distillation process. we have made ethanol on a production level of 15 gallons per hour since 1978. the following are feedstocks we have used... gatoraid powder from quaker oats at a rate of seven tons per week that would otherwwise been landfilled, rice cakes from the same souyrce at the rate of seven tons per week that otherwise would have been landfilled, apple cider pulp at a rate of 3000 lbs per week that would otherwise been landfilled, wind fallen fruit from orchards at a rate of six tons per week that would have otherwise rotted on the ground most recently we made ethanol from wastes from debbies cakes not only did we make ethanol but we also made biodiesel from the very same source, we made ethanol from culled carrots at a rate of seven tons per week, that would have otherwise been improperly disp[osed of saving a major carrot grower thousands in fines from the EPA. we made ethanol from sulphite liquors from papermills. ,from flat beer collected from bars and microbtreweries, from flat cocacola, ginger ale, and the wash off from cocacola bottling companies which contain 5% sugars this use of waste streams is largely ignored as a source of fuel.. ecogenics has been at the forfront of producing fuel from weaste for thirty years. we have made ethanol from rice straw, using cellulose hydrolysis. and the list of alternative crops is endless. ethanol will be at the forfront of alternatyive fuels if waste streams are used for the feed stocks just like we have shown that it is economically viable... see our website for more on ethanol from wastes marc Marc Orion Cardoso www.ecogenicsresearchcenter.org

There are many hurdels to make fermeting for biofuels cost and evironmentaly friendly/efficient. Fungals have plenty of potential in this subject for certain.

I was thinking of going with enzymes(cellulase for cellulose) for saccharification.
