lazy man's enhanced straw

well, this is sunday and i was supposed to be working on my cultures but i haven't previously gathered straw and materials for bulk innoculation so i thought...
what if i picked up the old straw i already have and to add NPK nutrients in the pasteurizing water?
do you guys think its a valid idea? if yes, what would be a good ratio for NPK?

Define NPK

If you're talking about using old used spent straw, I'd say buy new straw for $5 a bale you silly, lazy person. The answer to your original question goes along the same guidelines as to why it might be unhealthy to eat your dead grandmother.

Still -- use new straw -- it's a better substrate :wink:

Addendum:  Old straw will work fine, as long as it isn't decomposed (or decomposing.)  IOW, If it looks like it has stuff growing on it, buy new shit.

It may work
depends on what esle ie toxic contaminants may be in the NPK
Rush wayne says mushrooms can adapt to inorganic nitrogen sources but it take a while. Maybe add small amounts of teh NPK to the agar and spawn to preadapt it

NPK for nitrogenium/phosphorous/potassium.
i was planning no diluting a bit of 10-10-10 (aiming to obtain 1-1-1 or 2-2-2 on the straw)...
on toxic contaminants you mean organisms or nutrients?
my npk's all contain micronutrients, can't kill (shiz, i've been growing too many plants).

Isnt composted straw some of the best to use? That is what comerical growers use.

Composted isn't just decomposed though. Making proper mushroom compost is as complicated and technical a science as mycology itself. Of course you can make a decent product in a relatively easy manner, you can't just let it rot and hope it works. That would be akin to squirting some spores into a bag of brown rice, dumping in some water, throwing it out the back door and expecting shrooms.

hi guys, i've got a nice 'stash' of good new straw now, thank you all for the inputs!
i'm still gonna try to put npk into some of my jars/bags and see what happens, keep you updated.
btw, the straw in question was actually pretty dry, away from being rot...

Well from what ive heard shrooms use the protein and carbs, not npk as do plants which need it for photosynthesis.

In Rush Waynes book "Growing mushroom the easy way" he describes how he uses liquid plant fertilizer for growing mushrooms. And a friend of mine has tried that out and said that it increases yield significantly. So I think mushrooms - like plants - use these basic chemicals to produce their proteins etc. But I am not an expert - so I am not really sure about this.

Thast one of teh first ideas i had as a newbie mycologist coming from my organic growing background. I thought of reyydrating or dunking with a manure tea. The tehng that will make it mater is if those nutrients are water soluable linke nutrients or solids like carbs fats ect.
