Album review-Timothy Leary's "Turn On.............."
    #890447 - 09/18/02 08:13 AM (19 years, 11 days ago)

Today's album review is for the VERY trip-worthy soundtrack from the apparently unreleased film called  "Turn On, Tune In, Drop Out", by the great Dr. Timothy Leary. This album was made during the height of "flower power"..........1967.

This is, not surprisingly, the most psychedelic cd that I own. It's got lots of sitar, lots of spaced out , 60's cartoon-like sound effects, lots of 60's style guitar, lots of "OOOOOMMMM" sounds etc.. The cd starts out with Leary preparing Ralph Metzner for a trip. "The time has come Ralph. The time has come......to go out of your mind." Each track takes you further into Ralphs trip, as Leary guides him through it. Rosemary Woodruff, Leary's wife at the time, contributes haunting female sound bites throughout the cd. Many parts of the album have a very ghostly and mysterious feel. I can't really say which track is my favorite. Partly because it's all good, and partly because I can't remember which track has what.

I've listened to this on LSD more than a few times, and I love listening to it, because it's almost as if Leary is there with you. Leary understands "set and setting" very well, so you know his cd is going to be trip friendly. I wish this cd could have been a little longer though. It would have been nice if he could have made it around an hour long. Even if it's just a bunch of sounds and sitar music. Leary's words may be a little weird for some people when you first hear it(".........this is your body........."), but just remember that this was recorded in a much more innocent time, when people weren't quite as concerned with being ultra cool all of the time. I give this album 4 1/2 stars, but then again i'm a big Leary..........um, what's the word? Anyway, I think you should order this.
