Album review- Timothy Leary "You Can Be Anyone............."
    #1208799 - 01/11/03 07:21 AM (22 years, 19 days ago)

Today, i'm reviewing the Timothy Leary album "You Can Be Anyone This Time Around", recorded in 1969, and released in 1970. This album is better than "T.O.T.I.D.O.". It gives you a much better idea of what Timothy Leary was all about. It displays a lot more of his personal philosphy. There are only three tracks, so i'll go track by track...

Track 1 is "Live And Let Live". This track is the most historically important track. It features(besides Leary of course) Stephen Stills(Buffalo Springfield and CSNY) on guitar, John Sebastian(Lovin' Spoonfull) on guitar, Buddy Miles(Band Of Gypsys) on drums and Jimi Hendrix on BASS guitar! It's basically those guys jamming out in the background while an interview with Leary plays. Leary seems to have a great report with the reporters. They even laugh and clap when he makes jokes. They ask him how often he takes a psychedelic, and Leary says "my wife and I try to have a mind blowing experience once a week". They ask when the last time he had one, and he says "welll......i'm having one right now", and everyone erupts into laughter. They ask him what he thinks about marijuana, and Leary says "I think it's one of God's greatest gifts to mankind". He then talks about the politics of marijuana, which I think he's right on about.

Track 2 is the title track "You Can Be Anyone This TIme Around". This track is much better for meditation because it's Leary in the studio rapping to you while indian(eastern) style music plays in the background. Here's some of the things he said that I liked the most. "You can be anyone this time around. You could be God, this time around. You've got to be God, this time around". "You can be Krishna, this time around. Why not be Krishna, God of love, this time around?". "You can be Shiva, this time around". Then starts saying you could be different rock singers while he plays a snippit from a song of that artist. He says "You can be John and Yoko, this time around"(plays a clip from "The Ballad of John and Yoko"). "Then, "Allen Ginsberg, this time around"(plays a clip of Ginsberg reading from "Howl"). Then, "you can be anyone this time around, and sit in a cave in the Himalayas with a ten foot erection, making love to the universe and laughing and smiling, with high priest and everybody else this time around". "You can be a Rolling Stone(plays clip from "Sympathy For The Devil") or a Grateful Dead"(Leary fucks up here. Instead of playing a Dead clip, he plays a clip from Pink Floyd's "Take Up Thy Stethoscope And Walk" from "P.A.T.G.O.D."). Then he says "or fly in the Jefferson Airplane this time around"(plays a clip from "My Best Friend"), and then continues to encourage you to think of yourself as different Gods, planets and earthly places while a someone plays "Love Child" by The Supremes on the piano(?). Wonderful track.

Track 3 is "What Do You Turn On When You Turn On". Leary speaks over different instruments playing in the background. Most of what he says here are very scientific concepts. It shows you what a profound understanding his scientific mind had of the psychedelic experience. Most of the things he says here I can't even spell, so i'm not going to attempt it, but it sounds great. "The name of the game is to FEEL-REAL-GOOD".

I love this album. Even though right now I only own one more Leary cd, I have heard tracks from almost every one of his releases, and i'm going to go out on a limb here and say that "You Can Be Anyone This Time Around" is probably his best. I can't wait to get ahold of all of his albums. I give this album 4 1/2 out of 5 sugarcubes*(I don't have a picture of a half sugarcube).

Where can I  download these songs? Can you make them available for us at the shroomery?
I think Hendrix is a legend, and have NEVER heard him or hear OF him playing a BASS!

I don't think I could make the tracks available to The Shroomery really. You can download them from any file sharing system.

Yeah, it's pretty interesting to hear Hendrix playing bass. He doesn't go off on it or anything, he just jams with the other guys.

One thing I forgot to mention in this thread was that this album is OUT OF PRINT now. Luckily, I got mine at  www.half.com. It was "used", but it looks brand new.

Look for the individual tracks. I remember finding one or two of those tracks back when I had my own computer, and I used WinMX and Napster.

Also, www.weirdsville.com plays these tracks in the "psych" section, but they change it up everyday, so that's not a reliable source for them.

gregory a head? well, i dunno... i mean he used to be an overweight, steak-gobbling, scotch-drinking, highly-paid comedian (this after being a track star in college)... now he's a vegan, fasting, smart/funny fella with wit and conscience...
used to hang with all sorts of out there folks... lenny bruce, anti-war activists, stoners, poets... ran for president in '68 (nixon or humphrey? go dick gregory...)
maybe because of their shared antipathy towards the kind of folks who inhabited that oval room in d.c. (in a conversation with st. lenny, mr. gregory told his fellow "comedian" about "why we got to fuck boss charlie" - lenny bruce was jus' blown away, hehheh...
(oh, and then there's the time lenny was trippin' on dmt with leary & co, and shouted out something about gravity being repealed - as he fell out of the hotel window & managed to break some bones... crazy stoners, hehheh...)

I don't want to get too far off track, but Lenny Bruce used to take DMT with Leary and the gang?

He fell out of the window and broke bones?!
