It was probably the best showcase of Stephen King's writing style that I've seen.  If only the ending hadn't been so abysmally atrocious.

Agreed on both counts.  King says that he wrote It to sharpen his skills in preparation for digging deeper into the Dark Tower series, hence the Turtle and Legion.

Would you recommend The Dark Tower?  I've heard good things about it, but never got into it.

I really enjoyed it, especially the first four books, and the final one.  Books 5 and 6 seemed a little rushed, but they were still enjoyable. Definitely an epic cycle.  I also might be judging books 5 and 6 a bit more harshly, since I read up through the fourth in 1998, and had to wait years and years for the next installments.  I can't imagine what it would have been like for someone who got into the series in the '80s.

It really is his Magnum Opus, tying together a lot of disparate elements and themes from a lot of other works.

No movie has scared me since I was a kid (and the one that did most was Alien).

For uneasiness and so, go for "Salo or the 120 days of Sodom".

JAWS.

Because it is REAL and a situation an average person could find themselves in. The terror of not knowing what is underneath you and the way Spielberg shot that movie.

The fear is real. The situation is not. Peter Benchley once said that if he had known anything about sharks at the time, he never would've written the book Jaws.

What specifically was he referring to?

TBH, I think he probably said that because he regreted all the shark fear/killings after that movie.

Most of the movies that people have posted havent scared me in the least bit.
Only these movies actually scared me:
The Childs Play series
The Necronomicon
In the mouth of Madness

oh and there was one other, I cant remember the name of it though; its the one where the house was build on indian burrial grounds, skeletons pop up through the floor and an evil doll tries to poll the kids under the bed

Lion King.

"If I had a single wish, I would have every single human on this planet see this natural world the way I see it; the beauty in such simple things such as a fallen tree that is covered in moss and that has new trees growing from it. To some, fallen trees are ugly. But in reality, it is the circle of life at its finest. This is a beautiful world, its time that we recognize that before its all gone."

Ya it's stupid. I don't find it terrifying but it's lame, I would assume afgter all the great art and psychdelics people claim to enjoy here, over the years most would drift farther and farther away from what I would IMHO believe to be garbage entertainment.

And isn't entertainment supposed to be entertaining.

Personally I would assume when it comes to movies most of us are into drama, comedy(which in "real life" is often the same thing  seriously )
maybe some independent films and foreign stuff.

I mean, everyone think of their favourite movie of all time..hmm
Was it a horror movie?

It's about taste and some people don't share the same taste with others amazingly enough.

To address the topic: I haven't been scared by a movie in a long time, but the Candyman used to terrify me as a child.

BTW, Keep in mind I didn't list mystery suspense action etc..I should have, that was foolish.

90% of all horror movies suck IMO.
Maybe I'm "wrong" and I will find some great ones.

I understand taste Redstorm. And that it's individual.

So tell me, what's a really enriching cerebral horror movie.

I'll watch it with an open mind if you name one.

Have you ever seen John Carpenter's "The Thing"? It's a sci-fi/horror movie that's thought provoking. It does an amazing job of portraying hopelessness and paranoia of the situation they're in

That would be my recommendation. I think you'll like it.

I think what you're looking for in terms of a 'cerebral' horror movie is psychological horror.

Check out Jacob's Ladder, Identity, Pi, Mulholland Drive, and Lost Highway.

All great movies, but none of them would even come close to "scariest"

True.  Although I'd still be leery about watching Jacob's Ladder while on a high dose of any psychedelic.
