concerning alcohol extractions
    #8822583 -

if your doing an alcohol extraction on san pedro (aka Peruvian torch) is it acceptable to use denatured alcohol?? ive found information claiming that it is potentially dangerous but i have also found info that says that it is fine (as long as you make sure its thoroughly evaporated)

i would only use drinkable alcohol, the higher the proof the better, anything else is asking for a trip to the hospital.

Depends on whether the denaturant is volatile.  Probably best not to risk it.

agreed.

denatured = not for human consumption

I am not sure but if you use denatured and fail to evaporate correctly then you risk loosing your vision.

Why not use petroleum ether?  Cleanest solvent with next to no residuals left behind.

If methanol is the only thing in there besides ethanol, then it's fine.  If it's in a metal container, there's probably also a non-volatile anti-rust chemical.

trust me on this, if you cannot drink the stuff straight up, don't use it on something you  plan to consume orally, it will be a mistake that may end up being your last one.

it's just not worth it.

so being non volitile this potential anti rust chemical wouldnt pose a problem?

Non volatile = doesn't evaporate = you eat it and poison yourself

Listen to highdro

also what if it has METHYL ISOBUTYL KETONE in it?, i know its better not to risk it but it has already been created in this fashion and i want to find out whether its poisonous because i dont wanna throw it out unless it is

Look up the bp of methyl isobutyl ketone and you tell us.

I'm agreeing with highdro here though, don't use it on anything you intend to consume.  Especially since ketones can potentially react with other chemicals in whatever you extract

so in the future what would work? is petroleum ether safe? can i get that from the hardware store?

Petroleum ether would not work as far as I'm aware.  It certainly wont extract alkaloid salts, and it isn't so good for cactus alkaloid freebases either.  Sounds like you've got some homework to do.

You don't do homework by asking questions, you do homework by looking shit up.  There is a search function, you know.

ive been looking stuff up but ive been finding different answers so i figure a direct Q and A is in order...if you dont wanna help me though thats fine but if you do happen to be willing to help me out a but do you know if there is anything i can do to salvage or take out harmfull additives if i have already used denatured alcohol?

You could distill it, so you know the distillate is completely volatile.  I still don't know that you should trust that ketone without doing some further looking into it though.

Can you use the search function?  It's there for a reason.

If you have specific questions, that's fine, but it's clear that you are just too lazy to do even preliminary bits of research.  I can't in good conscience dole out information to someone with such an attitude towards the process.

i acctually am searching i have three other windows open looking through various posts and sites and such...you can call me lazy but im just not very knowledgeable...i started this project with someone explaining it to me who i thought was knowledgeable but ive realized that there knowledge was somewhat incomplete so im just trying to not waste what ive started i know i have a lot of questions but like i said before its hard to find a definitive answer without direct communication with someone
