"question and answer" he sat naked and drunk in a room of summer night, running the blade of the knife under his fingernails, smiling, thinking of all the letters he had received telling him that the way he lived and wrote about that-- it had kept them going when all seemed truly hopeless.
putting the blade on the table, he flicked it with a finger and it whirled in a flashing circle under the light.
who the hell is going to save me? he thought.
as the knife stopped spinning the answer came: you're going to have to save yourself.
still smiling, a: he lit a cigarette b: he poured another drink c: gave the blade another spin.

No this is the dictionary's deff. for addiction
Quote:
1. 1. Compulsive physiological and psychological need for a habit-forming substance: a drug used in the treatment of heroin addiction. 2. An instance of this: a person with multiple chemical addictions. 2. 1. The condition of being habitually or compulsively occupied with or or involved in something. 2. An instance of this: had an addiction for fast cars.
I am none of those.

Psycological addiction is enough. if u drink every day, most would end up needing a drink, i know (in ur context) its not a hardcore addiction, more like a relaxation aid. I dont normally drink for days at a time, only at christmas, but not normally as much as i have this year. ive had it before when ive woke up and ive felt like a drink, n i felt like i was on the edge of something then. some people think it might be a genetic thing. i just dont wanna b pissed for days n wake up a pisshead. How do u get addicted to alcohol

It also has to do with your genes....Like, if your father was an alcoholic, you have a better chance of becoming one..etc etc..and its goes down the family line.

It's not like there's a certain number of days in a row you drink and then become an alcoholic.
Addiction is about dependence. If you have trouble NOT drinking, then you're looking at addiction.
People with real addictions hear some guy saying "I got drunk 5 days in a row, does that mean I'm an alcoholic now?" and pretty much want to punch that guy in the face for being such a goof. Addictions don't show up after binging for a few days. Addictions happen over the course of a long period of time. When your life revolves around drinking, you're an alcoholic, not if you've spent a week partying.

Word......I get especially pissed when people who smoke pot every day claim to be "addicted". I've gone through hardcore pothead periods......and I've been hooked on opiates, heroin and oxycontin for most of the past 3 years. BIG fucking difference there, extremely big difference. It's like comparing climbing a small hill to climbing Mt. Everest.

In first year Uni I drank every day for a year and still wasn't an alcoholic. It's because I'm not that fond of alcohol.

Yeah, there's definitely a difference... however, I've seen some people who smoke WAY too much pot and claim not to be addicted. The withdrawal symptoms of opiates obviously make for a huge difference, but there are definitely people who have problems with simpler things.

Yes, not all students drink. And yes, it seems contradictory for me to say that I drank for a year and that I don't like alcohol in the same breath.
That was simply the lifestyle I was leading back then. I was living in a house with 6 dudes and we all got drunk (most) every night. But at no point did I feel like I needed alcohol, in fact I was usually glad to have a break for a day or two.
So it just goes to show you can drink for a long time and not be an alcoholic.

I usually have a handle of Jim Beam sitting right by my desk at all times at college. I pretty much drink every day, and have been for the 2 and a half years. I dont get drunk every day though, so I figure, Im a semi-alcoholic, as I really just enjoy drinking alcohol, not even necessarily to get drunk.

Just been looking on afew sites and found this bit of information.
http://www.addictions.co.uk/addiction.asp?ID=alc
As with all addictive behaviour problems, it is very difficult for a person to acknowledge the existence of a drinking problem and this means that people suffer for many more years than is necessary. It is often confused with recurring depression and high anxiety levels which are not relieved by conventional treatments, and a failure to identify the role of alcohol in these conditions often means a failure to refer for the correct treatment.
How common is it? Alcohol Dependency is by far the most common addiction and is responsible for the deaths of many thousands of people every year. Government figures suggest that up to 9.7% of the UK population may be classified as dependent on alcohol.
How do I know if I have it? People who are concerned should always seek professional assessment. The self assessment questionnaire on this site may give further insight. Some symptoms are more easily detected: 1) loss of control once drinking has started; 2) withdrawal symptoms ranging from mild tremors to frightening hallucinations; 3) Noticeable changes in the effects alcohol has on the individual over time.
How do people develop it? The condition is characterised by the fact that the sufferer, despite many attempts at control, finds that their drinking and the attendant consequences continues to get worse over the period, and the dependent person's guilt, shame and remorse levels become increasingly more burdensome. Attempts to stop can result in withdrawal symptoms which are relieved by taking more alcohol. Attempts at control ('just a couple of drinks won't hurt') almost always end in drunkenness, and things seem to get progressively worse. In extremes, suicide may seem the best option as depression and severe anxiety coupled with feelings of hopelessness and helplessness often accompany addiction to alcohol.
Can it be inherited? Although an actual gene has not been identified there is considerable evidence of genetic predisposition to the illness, through studies of twins and apocryphal evidence.
Can it be cured? Alcoholism is almost impossible to overcome alone, but with the help of others, a large number of people find recovery.
looks like its definately more likely to come about through dependance. I always thought that with it being a physical addiction, just having the drug in your system for a long period might cause it, like the way opioids change your brain very quickly, causing the addiction.
but then, you live and learn !!

Doe's if your british.. Im not trying to prove anything, just having a conversation about it, and ive learn't something so i think it was worth it. Never realised you could drink for so long safely (addiction wise anyhow) Why would i care if you was an alcoholic. sorry to sound rude, but you are quite agressive.

GnuBobo said: "question and answer" he sat naked and drunk in a room of summer night, running the blade of the knife under his fingernails, smiling, thinking of all the letters he had received telling him that the way he lived and wrote about that-- it had kept them going when all seemed truly hopeless.
putting the blade on the table, he flicked it with a finger and it whirled in a flashing circle under the light.
who the hell is going to save me? he thought.
as the knife stopped spinning the answer came: you're going to have to save yourself.
still smiling, a: he lit a cigarette b: he poured another drink c: gave the blade another spin.

I like that!
I dont know what kinda aswer could even explain this.
I been drinking since i was 14, weekly. I am 24. I don't think i am addicted I am just a man of habbit. I go out 3 nights a week sometimes 7. Sometimes I get wasted sometimes i have just one drink. When im home i dont drink unless i have some friends over or maybe a glass of wine with dinner. Im dont shake and get aggitated when i dont drink. I can go as long as i wanted to with out it. But i choose to go out and say hi to my friends. Lately i havn't been drinking a lot, just a beer or two.
My moms bf drinks a six pack to a 12 pack a day. Starting at 12 if he isn't working... He is a good man and isn't violent. He holds his liqoure and its just part of who he is and wants to be. You can say he is an alchoholic... but whats the deals with labeling people any way. I think lables are created just to make the people that create them feel better about them selfs....

I'm not proud.
The bottle has sucked the enjoyment right out of my life.

I'm drinking some of my uncle's delicious 12yr old home made cranberry wine.

Sounds nice, best stuff i ever made was some elderberry and rosehip wine, Its a red wine with a bitter sweet taste, all fresh produce, it was very nice, never made out like it since.

This batch here is his finest so far. It's very good stuff.
Never had elderberry before, but congrats on the nice batch man. It takes skill to make a good home made wine.
