Speed of Mycelial Growth Verses Nutrient Density

I've a got a question that may be obvious to some but may be not to others.  Does a more nutrient dense growing medium slow down the rate at which the mycelium spreads through the growing medium?  I can see how a more densely packed medium would limit air flow and as a consequence slow down growth.  However, would a higher nutrient concentration slow down growth because it's attempting to assimilate more nutrients at one time?

Comments anyone?

Hey,

In most cases the fungals will 'eat' only as much 'food' as they need.  In my quick thoughts the extra 'food' maybe one of the following:

  • A waste

  • Food for other, and possibly harmful microbes

  • An inhibitor of colonization (due to a negeative reaction to high ferts)

  • Etc



I would think (but don't know) you should use the 'recommended' amount and not over do it.

Well, the mycelium will keep spreading through and assimilating the substrate, as long as the conditions are right for it to do so. Provided of course, there are no contaminates that weaken or destroy it.

The problem that I see, (and I'm a noob so bear with me here), is that one of the main factors for fruiting is 100% colonization, (at least in "captivity").

Therefore, the premise that they will "eat only as much food as they need" doesn't really apply here, as they goal of all home cultivators is to obtain the largest possible flushes of prime fruitbodies.

This being the case, don't we need to adhere to the 100% colonization rule?

Well, I've grown a number of mushrooms species but this is my very first time growing dung loving mushrooms and my first time growing mushrooms on whole grains like sterlized rye. Assuming that the culture is being incubated at optimal temperatures and moisture content, when dung loving mushrooms are grown on whole grains, do they grow much much slower than when they are grown dung substrates?
