Uneven mycelium growth
    #2053567 - 10/29/03 12:20 PM (20 years, 5 months ago)

My friend's single jar is doing alright with a good amount of growth at two of the four innoc points. Is there any way to speed the growth at the other points? They don't seem to be doing much at all. Should he re-innoculate them? Or maybe turn the jars on the side with the undeveloped sides facing down to force spores there?

If it is your only jar you probably don't want to risk contamination, so don't add anything to it. I agree with shroom muncher and littlejohn, shake it up.
How long has it been since you innoculated? you might just be impatient, like most of us.

It's weird, I've read a bunch of different versions of the PF Tek and I don't remember one of them saying to shake the jars. I always thought it was bad for the mycelium but thinking about it now it makes a lot of sense.
As for the innoculation, I never have done a jar but my friend innoculated on Fri, Oct. 17. I think his setup may be the problem, they're in his drawer in a small steralized container sitting right beside a heat rock with no extra humidification.

shaking and flipping seems to work well. PF Tek doesn't mention it, but it also says to pack down your jars before innoculating, and wait to see in vtro pins before birthing. No one source of information is perfect, that's what the shroomery is for!

Shaking can work, but the idea is to actually break apart the colonized mycelium and mix it up. Usually this isn't very possible with PF-style jars. I suppose shaking every day could do something, but the more you fuck with the jars the more risk of contamination. Better to leave them alone unless there's actually a problem.

How long, exactly, have they been colonizing? It can take up to 3 or 4 weeks. If you see no sign of growth from the spots in like 5 days there may be a problem, but realize, if you're looking at them EVERY day you'll probably not notice much growth (watching the pot of water boil....)

As I said, he innoculated on Oct. 17 and started seeing signs of growth about a week and a half ago. He's not that impatient, he just doesn't want all the mycelium to be at different stages when it comes time to fruit. I guess he'll just leave it as it is for another week and see how its doin then. Oh yeah, he's using standard verm/brf for the cakes so I don't think he can shake them.

i never saw a pf jar you could shake, if it was made properly. not unless you have 1/2 pint of mixture in a 1 pint jar or something. after sterilising, it should turn into a sticky lump:

give it time

if you want your jars to colonise fast build a 'tub in a tub' incubator, ala magash.
make your own syringes, use 2ml+ per jar.
full colonisation in 10 days is reasonable to expect in about 80% of jars.

i leave about a half inch of space at the top of my jars so when i shake, i shake the hell out of it and it normaly knocks it lose some....but than again i think i am making my shit to dry.some are colonizing and some aren't. The ones that seem to be doing best are a grain corn mixture that i added some honey water in the place of water and than knocked them up with spore solution. those jars are doing great.
