a seasonal cacti cutting routine

quick newb question:

Would it be a good idea to take seasonal (San Pedro and similar cacti) cuttings for most efficient growth over time? I am thinking around mid-fall I take my cuttings, and that way, instead of sitting around in the dark all winter to prevent etoliation, the time will be spent rooting and callousing, and hopefully they will be all around ready for growth by late spring. Is this how you guys do it? It sounds like a good idea, but Ive never heard it mentioned so I wonder.

hmmmm...
i don't see anything wrong with taking cuttings at the end of the season and using the winter season for rooting up...
however i have always found that cuttings root better when the conditions are more suited to growing...

if you took them indoors over the winter and put them under a light then hell yeah :yesnod:

btw, light is the least important fator in preventing etiolation
low temperatures and witholding water are far more important for inducing dormancy...

How low of temperature is desired? 

If it gets warm with no water will it etiolate?

you wouldn't want it any warmer than 10c (50f) really...
maybe a bit higher would be ok, but down in to single figures would be best...
and yeah if they are kept dry and in a warm place, they will probably still etiolate...
i mean if they are dormant already, short period rises in temp are not likely to wake them...

yea, last season I realized how much of a bitch etoliation can be. Had one cactus, and I figured I would let it go and chop off the etoliation before next season, root it and get a new cacti which I wanted anyway. I thought if I did this, the etoliated part would kind of grow into itself (being uniform in itself) and would therefore grow uniformly, but it doesn't look like its doing that. Now instead, it looks like I am going to have a cacti with a skinny base and a fat top, what I was initially trying to avoid except backwards. So I guess there is really no reason to let them go. I only tried this because it seems like a pain to induce dormancy and find a suitable place to store it, and also I figured I could get some extra growing time in. I suppose theres good reason that everybody around here does it.

so would cutting them and rooting in winter increase growth rate as it will be able to grow all season?

Course I am just as curious of alternatives to this too, anything to get an idea of the fundamental routine of things.

of course if you can get your cutting(s) well rooted over the winter and ready to grow for the start of the growing season, this will be an advantage.
