What's So Great About A Mac?

Should I purchase one?

I'd like to work with it on writing, music and perhaps messing about, like with photoshop and such.

What sort of stuff can a Mac offer?

Its just a different operating system than Windows.  Any professional creative professional program out there for windows (photoshop, office, etc.) probably has a mac version.  Ive been using a macbook pro for almost 2 years now running programs like Logic and Pro Tools without a problem.  With my experience its all a matter of preference.  Leopard does look pretty cool too, but i haven't gotten it yet.

They claimed it was a simpler system in the ads, which would make a difference with me.

And the programs are pretty standard from mac to pc?

So maybe i'd just be paying for the trend?

If you want to start a garage band out of your mom's basement, organize 10,000 songs and pictures, or make greeting cards and stationary paper, get a Mac.

If you have actual work to do (write papers, spreadsheets, data analysis, graphs etc.) get a PC.

buy what you like and can afford. macs are more expensive. OSX is nicer than windows vista...

macs dont always "just work". they have their problems too. but I have to say that my 17'' MBP runs better than any windows machine i have (2k,xp,vista) and can do more creative art type work than my linux machines. what i mean by better is much fewer crashes, slowdown, viruses, etc. what are its problems?? hm. Some time machine problems, an occassional wifi fuckup that I never had with a windows machine, a few other odds and ends that can piss you off.

ultimately no machine is perfect. but hey, just about any way you go you get the same programs....esp if you get a mac and get bootcamp going

plus macbook pros are the best looking laptop out there :tongue2:

man i wish i could get into linux.  honestly though PCs are hassle enough, and i don't think i could take the time to really get in there and learn an entirely new OS

theres not really fewer applications at all.
plus with a mac you can run windows so you get the best of both the apple and PC world.

Simpler is a subjective word.  I do find simpler, and like it alot, but I'm used to it.  I know if you do buy a mac and don't like it, you can install and run Windows on it.  Their laptops are pretty awesome though, and its a nice, clean, and organized package.

Programs are pretty standard across platforms,except for games.  That has been getting better recently.  But if you are one to play alot of games, then stick with windows.

In my less than humble opinion a Mac is actually just a more expensive PC now that they use an Intel processor.  In the golden age, Macs has a RISC processor which made it vastly superior to PCs in certain types of calculations.  Graphic design and audio/video processing used to be much faster on a Mac, but now the only reason Mac Pros are good for design is that they have 8 processors and a fuckton of available memory slots.

I used to be a Mac loyalist, but I wash my hands of them now.  I equate a person who brags about the superiority of a mac vs a PC to someone who talks about how Chevrolet products are superior to General Motors products.

For most practical purposes, Macs are probably better home computers. 

If you wanna do shit like video games, spreadsheets, or internet piracy, then PC is your best bet.

you can still do that with a mac...

because you can install Windoze on a mac.

also spreadsheets or any office work can easily be done through OSX on iWork or office 2008....

I can do any p2p/BT apps directly in OSX

and games can still be played on the MBP or macpro through windows.

No you really can't argue the videogames standpoint.  I have a really powerful Mac in my house and it just doesn't run videogames as well as my PC, which is years older, although the graphics do look good.  They're both in fine operating condition so it's a pretty valid comparison.
